How to become a dentist

To become a dentist, you will need to invest a lot of money in your education. To apply to dental school, you will need a Bachelor’s Degree. There are only a few schools that offer fast admissions after two to three years of university studies. With the exception of the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry (which is only three-year in San Francisco), all 68 of the currently-accredited American dental schools are four year programs.

A specific major is not required for admission to medical school. The requirements to be admitted to dental school include: a minimum of three courses, principally in science, an overall score on the Dental Admissions Test, and letters of recommendation.

A student who completes dental school will be awarded either a DDS (or DMD) degree. All degrees can be considered equivalent and have the same accreditation agency as the curriculum requirements.

history lesson explains the difference between the two. The first dental school in the United States was the Baltimore College of Medicine founded in 1840, which began granting the DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree. Harvard quickly established a dentist school. Since all of their degrees in Latin are available, they decided to offer a DMD degree (Doctor Medicinae Dentariae, or Doctor of Dental Medicine). Since then, universities choose which degree to grant, with two thirds currently offering the DDS.

Job Outlook For Dentists

It is clear that dentists can earn a lot of money. However, what is the future employment outlook?

The BLS estimates that the annual growth rate of dentists in employment is 7% from 2018-2028. This is 22% more than what is the average for all occupations. In 2018, there were 155,000 dentist positions available in the US, and there is an anticipated increase of 11,600 jobs from 2018 to 2028.

what the BLS states about employment for dentists:

“Demand for dental services will increase as the population ages. Many of those in the Baby-boom Generation will need to have their teeth cleaned. In the future, there will be more need for dental care because people in every generation are less likely to lose their teeth. In addition, there will be increased demand for complicated dental work, including dental implants and bridges.” The table below shows the different growth rates for dentists. They are listed from highest growth to lowest.

Types of Dentist Employment Rate (2018-2028).

Dentists, general 8%

Oral & maxillofacial Surgeons 7%

Orthodontists 7%

Prosthodontists 7%

Specialists – All other specialists, 5% BLS

#1: Doctorate In Dentistry

It takes how long to become a dentist. The four-year dental school requirement for dentists is met. All must also have received their doctorate in dentistry. There are two types you can receive a dental doctoral degree:

Doctor Of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Doctor at Medicine in Dentistry (DMD).

there’s no difference in coursework or skills learned. In other words, a dentist with a DDS is just as qualified as a dentist with a DMD, and vice versa. The choice of which of these dental doctorates will depend upon the one you receive from your school.

If you are looking for a dental school, make sure it is accredited by Commission on Dental Accreditation. American Dental Association reports that the United States has more than 65 accredited schools of dentistry.

You can only enroll in dental school after you’ve earned a bachelor’s degree typically in a related field of study, such as chemistry or biology and passed the Dental Admission Test (DAT), which we discuss in more detail later.

The competition for dental school is fierce, so you must have a very strong application to gain admission to the top schools.

#2: Licensure

You will require licensure to practice dentistry in every state. While each state has its own licensure requirements, all require that aspiring dentists complete the following three steps:

Dental school (i.e., the educational component)

Written exam

Clinic exam

If you haven’t passed the state’s written or clinical examinations, it is illegal to practice dentistry. You can find all information from your state’s dental board about which exams are required in order to become a dentist.

As mentioned above, the first requirement for licensure is the completion of a four-year dental school program at a CODA-accredited institution.

The second requirement is the passing of a written exam, which is the same for all states: Part I and Part II of the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE). The two parts of this exam are both administered by The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations.

How the ADA describes NBDE content: Each examination is comprised exclusively of multiple choice test items. Part I covers the basics of biomedical science, dentistry anatomy, and ethical testlets. Part II covers the clinical aspects of dentistry and includes patient management. Students usually take Part II of the written exam in their last two years at dental school. The program will provide advice and support.

To be eligible for licensure, you must pass a comprehensive clinical examination. Not all states require this. The actual test varies by region but is usually a live-patient exam.

If you successfully meet these three conditions, your state will issue you a license to practice dentistry.

#3: Specialty state licensure and residency/continued education

While most dentists become generalists, there are some who want to be specialists in certain areas, like pediatric dentistry and periodontics.

This would mean you have to go to school, live in a permanent residence and then apply for state licensure to your selected specialization.

These requirements may vary from one state to the next, so check in with your state dentist board directly for details.

Support and related positions

While a dentist’s doctorate is not required, there are many other careers in dentistry. Dentist assistants are responsible for sterilizing tools, transporting patients in exam rooms and through dental procedures, as well as taking xrays and making impressions of the patients’ teeth.

The responsibilities of dental hygienists go beyond those of assistants. They are responsible for routine or emergency cleanings as well as checking the health and condition of patients. Dental hygienists get misunderstood for dentists. This is because they have the highest level of knowledge and are the people you will see most frequently during a dental cleaning.

Our dental receptionists are what made it possible for us to get things done. Although they aren’t required to have dental education at the same level as the other positions, a dental receptionist often has to understand many different facets of life at a dental office. The receptionist is usually there for you to smile and comfort you as you call to make an appointment, to remind you of your appointments, or to explain your insurance.

Finally, dentists recommend that dental technicians be employed in laboratories which produce dental appliances. This includes custom-made mouthguards or oral retainers. Do you sleep with a retainer or night guard in? If so, these are probably the ones you can thank for it.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
