Four Signs

Trust is something we all want to have. Many patients rank their competent, trained dentist as somehow not on equal ranking with their internist, surgeon or optometrist. A dentist, though, has an enormous responsibility to follow best practices in patient care.

The entire body can be affected by diseases of the mouth.

In the Reading, Pennsylvania office of a dentist, four signs were clearly visible.

Equipment that was not sterilized The Reading dentist didn’t dry his sterilized equipment, leaving them unsafe

Expired medications Health officials found medications two years past their expiration dates in the Reading dentist’s offices

Unprofessional behavior The Reading dentist was actually located in California, visiting only twice a month to see patients and run the practice

Incorrect procedures. Health inspectors inspecting Reading’s dentist offices discovered dead rodents, and even insects close to the sterilization equipment

Reading was so serious that the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommended patients test positive for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

The Department determined that “infection control methods at this practice were poor and created the possibility for harm.”

7 Health Problems Your Dentist Can Spot

Open wide! You can tell a lot from your mouth about your health, including heart disease and bone disease.

Pat F. Bass III MD MPH Medically reviewed “You have a cavity”. No one wants to be told bad news at the dentist’s office. Dental health is indicative of good general health. Your dental care can also reflect your overall health. That’s why your dentist can tell you a lot more about your health than simply the state of your mouth. Your teeth may be showing signs of problems inside, such as your digestion, bones or heart.

A 13 percent reduction in stroke risk compared with people who did not get this dental care.

You might be able to tell your dentist if you have one of these conditions when you next visit. What’s the use of lip service?

The gradual decline in cognitive function can often be accompanied by disorganization, confusion and loss of memory. Koslow says that early dementia patients may exhibit all signs of bad oral hygiene.

In fact, poor oral hygiene may even be a risk factor for dementia, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society. University of California scientists studied over 5,000 senior citizens for 18 years. The results showed that people who brush more often than they did daily were 65 percent less likely to suffer from dementia. Research suggests that the reason for this increase in dementia risk is due to gum disease bacteria.

You should speak to your dentist if you suspect that a family member is neglecting her dental health.

You may be surprised to learn that healthy mouth habits can also help maintain a healthy heart. Studies have shown surprising correlations between your heart and your dental health.

Alyson Hop Koslow (DDS), a clinical assistant in restorative dentistry at University of Illinois Chicago says: “Inflamed or loose gums may indicate the presence of heart disease.” That’s because if you have a gum disease like periodontitis , the bacteria in your gums could travel to your heart and contribute to coronary artery disease . Bacteria may also increase your risk for heart disease by contributing to the formation of clots or further plaque build-up in your arteries that can interfere with blood flow to the heart. In a Swedish study, 53 percent of people had higher heart attack risk if they had more infection in the gums around the base of their tooth.

A recent AHA study has found that regular cleanings of the teeth will protect and preserve your smile.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
