10 States in which Dentists Are Most Successful

For the purposes of this study, dentists refer to the detailed occupation recognized by the BLS as “dentists, general.” The national average annual wage of a dentist is $175,840, over three times the average annual salary for all occupations, $51,960. In addition, average salaries for dentists have increased 6.8% from $164570 to the current level in five years.

The truth is that dentist salaries can differ greatly depending upon where they are situated. In many states, the average dentist salary is $200,000, while in other states, it can be as low as $50,000 less than the national average.

Here’s a list with the 10 highest paying states for dentists:

Delaware average dentist salary: $264,440

Alaska average dentist salary: $259,350

Ten States where Dentists Make The Most Money

However, their incomes are still higher than most other jobs. California, for example, has higher incomes than most other states and is not surprising. Wyoming’s lack of dentists is another reason Wyoming is so interesting. This has benefited the salaries of dentists in neighboring states but its wages do not reflect that.

Below are the 10 lowest states in terms of dentist salaries.

Louisiana average dentist salary: $124,020

Wyoming average dentist salary: $125,120

Dentist Starting Salary

The median salary for dentists in America was $156,240 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics as of May 2018.

Although dentists will not make this much right out of school, they may still be able to earn an impressive salary of around $120,000 per the year ( PayScale). While your salary will be different depending on where you reside and the place you work, it will still be less than that of a tenured dentist or high-ranking dentist.

PayScale allows you to conduct a comprehensive, in-depth salary survey. PayScale’s salary reports are based on real dentists earning current salaries and not from job postings.

PayScale’s anonymous user base of 1,802 users shows that entry-level dental professionals with less five years of work experience are paid an average $120,00 per month, according to PayScale as of this writing.

How much does a dental practice owner make?

Ada.org reports that the median net income for dentist practice owners in America was $197.2k (general dentists) and $330.2k (specialist dentists).

Ziprecruiter.com claims that the average price for a private dentist is $178.6k. This includes highs up to $366.5k and lows down at $25.5k.

Paysa.com claims the average is even lower, at $150.3k, with highs of $170.75k and lows of $139.4k.

Paysa.com and Ziprecruiter.com do not confirm that the numbers are applicable to general dentists. But comparing their numbers to ADA’s numbers, we can safely assume they refer to a dental practice owner who works as a general dentist.

We did the same with the associate dentist salary. Now we will consider these average figures to determine the salary of a dental office owner. That makes the average salary of a dental practice owner $175.4k. Owners of dental practices in areas with high income can expect to be paid up to $268.6k. Those who are located in lower-income areas will earn $82.45k.

2020 was turbulent, but 2019 brought some relief for dentists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics ( BLS) reported that dentists made $159,200, or $76.54 an hour, last year. This was an increase from 2018’s $156,240, and $75.12 figures.

Beyond the numbers The BLS is also optimistic about the prospects for dentistry after the pandemic. It projects that overall employment will grow by 3% between 2019 and 2029. This is roughly the same rate as all other occupations. According to the bureau, the potential growth can be attributed to an aging population.

The BLS stated that baby boomers keep more teeth with age than other generations. They also require more dental care. This treatment will include complicated work such as implants and bridges. This is due to the higher risk of developing oral cancer with age.

BLS predicts that demand for services in dentistry will rise due to ongoing research linking oral care to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, heart disease, and other related issues. The BLS stated that dentists must provide instruction and care to promote good oral hygiene.

The BLS stated that overall, job prospects are good for dentists looking to work in less-served regions. Even though competition for dentists is likely to increase, there will be a decrease in the number of people who have graduated from dental school.

BLS projects that total dentists will increase from 151,000 in 2019, to 155,000 in 2029. It includes 3700 new general dental positions, 100 oral and maxillofacial doctors, 200 orthodontists and 300 new dentists. The BLS does not expect the number of prosthodontists or other specialists to increase.

The median salary for these specialties is higher than that of general dentists. Orthodontists were fourth to sixth in the BLS ranking of highest-paid occupations. With a median salary of $155,600, general dentists ranked fourteenth.

The geography of the area also makes a big difference. With an average annual wage of $262,000.00, general dentists were the highest paid in Rhode Island. Alaska earned $239.930, North Dakota $225.770 and Maine $220.400.

By city, Warner Robins in Georgia was tops with an unspecified amount, followed by Burlington, North Carolina, at $278,360; Burlington-South Burlington, Vermont, in $275,340; Longview, Texas, at $272,440; and Olympia-Turnwater, Washington, at $267,240.

Auxiliary Careers Dental assistants are key to the health and well-being of their patients. The median wage they earned was $76,220 annually or $36.65/hour in 2019. This represents an increase of 2018’s salary and $35.97 figure. BLS also predicts 6% growth in job opportunities between 2019-2029 and 13,300 new positions.

According to recent Bureau of Labor Statistics statistics, the average dentist salary in the United States is $178.260.

That may not necessarily reflect how much dentists actually make. For example, the American Dental Association looks at a dentist’s net income, which accounts for a practice’s expenses as well. The ADA has just released data that shows the $190,440 average net income for general dentists.

It does not matter how you define it, dentistry ranks among the highest-paying jobs. Unfortunately, this comes with a heavy price. Class 2019 dentists had $292169 in debt.

The Salary of A Dentist: How To Pay Off Student Debt

You can still be in debt even though you are a top-flight dentist. Lenders may offer small-business loans and mortgages that are more favorable than a dentist’s ratio of income to debt, but your monthly student loan payments could still be a problem.

Additionally, interest on dental school loans can run into the thousands. An average debt balance of $292,169 with a 7% interest rate would accrue around $115,000 in interest over 10 years.

You could potentially free up additional cash, become debt-free faster and save on interest in the long run by refinancing to a lower interest rate. Refinancing to a rate of 5% instead of a rate of 7% would save you more than $35,000 in 10 years.

Not everyone is able to refinance dental school loans. If you refinance federal students loans, you will lose benefits from government loans like income-driven payments. Evaluate all your dental school loan repayment options to find the right solution for you.

Is A Dental Career Worth It?

These are just a few of the many pros and disadvantages to pursuing dental work. But, we must address one thing: Will the salaries be worthwhile after a long and expensive education of 7-8 years?

According to the data provided by Student Loan Hero, dentists are expected to put an average investment of $570,000 towards their training. These include principal and interest student loans as well as $220,000 for lost income potential. This is money that could be earned post-graduate rather than going to school. It is estimated that dentists can return that investment in as little as 8 years.

This is great news. It means that in the long-term, education and training are worthwhile. And the benefits accrue even after all loans are paid, with dentists making $90,000 more than they would with only a bachelor’s degree.

It depends on where the dentist works but there may also be benefits. Stock options, and other benefits, are often offered in addition to a competitive base pay, particularly for those dentists who receive support from a DSO like Heartland Dental. A lot of research shows that dentists who are able to help patients instead of managing billing, appointment setting and marketing is more enjoyable. The DSO program allows dentists to have a set schedule with predictable hours, which is more convenient for the family and reduces time spent on administrative tasks.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
