Faq from a Dentist

Are you a good dentist?

Yes. Being a dentist can be difficult. Before a person can become a Doctor of Dental Surgery, or Doctor of Medicine and Dentistry (DMD), there is much education. There are 4 years to complete an undergraduate degree, and another 4 years of school for dental school after you have graduated from high school.

For acceptance to dental school, applicants must have excellent grades. Dental school applications require at minimum a B grade. This is evident by the 3.57 average GPA among dental school applicants. That means your competition is very stiff and if your grades aren’t that good, it’s doubtful you’ll be accepted with other applicants having higher GPAs.

What is it like to work as a dentist?

It is much easier to become a dentist than a doctor, because there are no residency and internship requirements. The only problem is that if your choice of specialty leads to more difficulty and higher costs.

If you’re asking this question because you’re debating between becoming a dentist or a doctor yourself, there are probably other, more important factors to consider. Education is the same for both professions, and it can be just as exhausting. Although the education is similar, there may be some differences in working conditions.

While doctors are often faced with emergencies, long hours and other human drama, dentists don’t face such issues. Instead, they work within the hours of their patients and can deal with fatalities and death.

The short answer to how many total years does it take to become a dentist is somewhere between six and eight years. This estimation is not exact and it depends on the person who studies full-time.

How to become an Orthodontist

Becoming an orthodontist is a long road through school. It usually takes approximately 12 years of formal university education to become a certified specialist in orthodontics!

A four-year Bachelor’s Degree, typically a Bachelor in Science degree, will start your university career. After completing your bachelor’s degree, you will apply to and get into dental school. It takes an additional four years. There are 10 dental schools in Canada, and 66 dental schools in the United States. Check them out here After eight years of university, you will be a general dentist! Many dentists decide to become specialists in dentistry, such as orthodontists. To do this you will need to complete a Master of Science degree along with a residency program. Others specialties are pediatric dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, oral surgery and periodontics. Schools often require that you work as a generalist for at least two more years before entering into a residency.

Canada offers seven dental schools offering a master’s program in orthodontics. They accept only three to five residents annually, which is less than thirty positions in the entire country.

After you have completed your residency in dental specialties, you’ll take the National Dental Specialty Board certification exam, administered by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Upon passing this examination, you are then officially a certified specialist in orthodontics in Canada!

A dentist is ready to apply their knowledge once they’ve completed the dental school program, passed all required exams, and received any postgraduate training. The dentist may open their own practice to teach patients how to maintain healthy mouths, treat and diagnose dental problems or help them with other issues.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
