HP Office. Jet Pro 9015e is likely to be the easiest printer you’ve ever had to set up, and that alone is enough to recommend it. It prints well (and fast), can scan great, and costs a very affordable 8.9C/per page for color or 2.2C/ per black page. HP Instant Ink is a great option if you plan to print large quantities of photos. The six-month trial comes along with the initial purchase. Each color page will cost as little as 2.9C/. It looks great in any office, thanks to a clean, compact design, and it comes with a two-year warranty that’s twice as long as what you’d get with most competing printers. This replaces the Office. Jet Pro 9015 has the same hardware as the Office. The only difference is the extended warranty, longer Instant Ink trial and additional software features that come with the HP+ printer ecosystem. The older 9015, which is still available at a discounted price, might work for you if you don’t want the HP+ extras.

To figure out if an all-in-one is right for you, ask yourself a few questions:

Do you need to print often but not all day, every day? About 100-500 pages per month. The inkjet AIOs listed below are perfect for you. However, if you are a frequent printer user scroll down and check out our upgrade choice or think about upgrading to an enterprise machine. A monochrome laser printer is a great choice, as well as a quality scanning app. If your home is not locked down, consider putting the printer away and using the Fed, library or work printer instead. You can also buy ex-store. What are your scanning habits? AIOs may be worth your investment if you and your partner scan multiple pages per week or scan them both. An AIO can be a great option if you do not scan often. You might be interested in one of these picks. But if you don’t, a black-and-white laser AIO might save you some money.

These questions show that not everyone is a good candidate for color-inkjet AIOs. We said that every printer was a pain a few years ago. That’s still true even the best ones available today aren’t a joy to use. Printer makers are making some cautious advances that have given rise to hope for the future. Ink-subscriptions that save money and keep printers running smoothly have been developed by the printer makers. There are also more printers with larger ink reservoirs, which don’t require refilling as often. Even though wireless connections still can be shaky, HP, Canon, and other printers have adopted 5 GHz WiFi. HP advertises self-healing wireless connections. That is, the printers automatically detect any connection problems and try to fix them, or give guidance rather than simply throwing up an unclear error message. The popularity of mobile printing apps is increasing, reflecting smartphone’s dominance over the PC.

AIOs are still popular despite ongoing quality issues. They can be used as a single-stop solution for all your home document production needs. A mid-range AIO is the best choice for someone who copies or scans on a daily basis and, occasionally, needs to fax. Although they have seen a decrease in cost since we first started to cover them, inkjets still remain more expensive. Though AIOs are jacks-of-all-trades and masters of none, they also represent the most economical way to address all of the document production needs a home or small business might have.

It was our goal to find an affordable printer with the right features that are essential for your home or office. Here’s what we looked at to find the best of the best.

Printer type: A laser printer can be expensive so an inkjet will work best. We did however test the color laser all in-ones to be able to recommend one for home and small business owners who are more demanding.

Automated Document Feeder: A wonderful AIO should have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), as it automates large scanning and copying jobs, which will save you time.

AIOs have the ability to print two sides (duplex), scan, and copy. Single-pass duplex printing, scanning, and copy is the ultimate goal.

Low operating costs: Toner and ink used for black-andwhite printing should be less than two cents per sheet, while color prints should only cost about three- or four times the amount. If manufacturers offer a subscription ink plan, we take that into account as well.

High quality scan and print quality. Although most modern printers are capable of producing high-quality results we feel that they produce excellent prints. However, certain models can generate text sharper, better colors or photos. The printer which produces the best prints will be chosen, regardless of what else. The same applies to scanners. Here, we evaluate both the quality of scans overall and whether the ADFs keep the bulk scanning job straight.

HP Office. The HP Jet Pro 9015e inkjet printer all-in one is not the fastest, but it has the highest quality for most. This printer can be set up quickly and is easy to use. Its running costs are a reasonable 2.2C/ per page for printing in black or 8.9C/ for color, with the option to join HP’s Instant Ink program for set-and-forget refills and cheaper color printing. You will receive a 6-month free trial of Instant Ink. This allows you to test the printer and see whether it is right for you. With its sleek design, this printer is more attractive than other similar-looking models. Its small touchscreen and fragile tray are almost forgiveable. This printer has a two-year warranty which we find to be twice as long as most other printers this price range.

The Office. Jet Pro 9015e offers the most straightforward setup, and it is a hallmark of its Office. Jet stablemates. To get it up and running, visit 123.hp.com , enter the product name, and hit the download button to acquire HP’s Easy. You can now start the installer. The installer walks you through getting the AIO connected, registered, and working with your computer, usually in around 10 minutes or less. Smooth and simple, it is a far cry from the clunky setups of other manufacturers. From your smartphone, you can download the HP Smart app (Android and i. OS) and add the printer in just a couple of steps. It’s easy and painless.

HP Smart App is extremely easy-to-use and customizable so you see the main functions most often at the top.

Each 9015e includes enough ink per box to print approximately 850 black/white pages or about 420 color pages. You could use that ink for quite some time depending on the amount you are using. The running costs of the HP 962XL Ink Cartridges are very affordable. Each cartridge lasts approximately 150 pages and can be refilled every two years. This is just an estimate of the expected page yields. Ink waste from cleaning can cause real differences. Alternatively, you could opt for third-party ink , which is substantially cheaper but may not produce perfect results, especially on glossy photos.

Of course, HP also offers its Instant Ink subscription service, which lets you choose between several tiers based on how much you expect to print each month, from 50 to 700 pages. Instant Ink has a reasonable cost per page of 6.6C/ in the worst case and 3.6C/ the best. What’s more, printing color pages is as affordable as printing black. Instant Ink automatically delivers new cartridges whenever ink runs out. The service automatically sends new cartridges when ink runs out. If you have changing needs, your subscription tier may be modified at your discretion. The 9015e currently comes with Instant Ink for six months, plus you get additional free months when friends refer.

The Office. Jet Pro 9015e’s greatest flaw is likely its one 250-sheet tray. It’s standard for home printers, but it might not be sufficient to meet the needs of some users. Since there’s only one tray, you need to manually swap out your plain letter paper whenever you need to print on something else whether it’s legal, labels, glossy photo stock, or resume paper. You’d prefer to use a dual tray printer, such as the Office. Jet Pro 9025e HP’s tiny slide-andfold tray is what we are least fond of. It extends to the front of your printer. Office’s best feature is its slide-and-fold output tray. Jet Pro 8720 was our prior pick. It had a built-in output tray, behind the huge touchscreen. Your documents would be less likely fall and get scattered all over your office. The new model is different.

With a display of just 2.7inches, the 9015e has a small size. It works fine, but the limited real estate does make it hard to hit the smallest on-screen buttons, such as the gear icon that takes you to the Settings menu. It’s possible to make a few mistakes.

You can’t use this port to print Word documents. PDFs and images are A-OK, though. Photo: Ben Keough The USB port on the left side of the machine is nice to have in a printer at this price, but potential buyers should be aware that you can print only JPEGs and PDFs through it Word files are a no-go. Scans can also be saved as JPEGs/PDFs to USB drives.

The Office. The Jet Pro 9015e can produce excellent snapshot prints with sharpness and vivid color. The problem is that these colors don’t always match perfectly. We found that glossy photos made with the 9015e displayed a lot of contrast and slightly misaligned colors in our prints. Although this issue isn’t likely to affect you if making prints for the fridge only, it will be a concern if you’re printing to take home. If, however, you love to photograph, you’ll want to invest in a photo printer. In duplex mode, the 9015e stops at each end to let ink from the previous side dry. The Office 9015e is not the same as other Office models. Jet Pro series appear to take more time to pause than any other printers. The speed of home printers is often a concern, however, staring at “Ink drying please wait” messages can be quite annoying, particularly when large jobs are involved.

Brother MFC-805DW Brother’s entry-level AIO costs the least. But, while it’s not the fastest, most designed or easiest to use it produces stunning scans, prints, and images.

Brother MFC-J805DW is a true budget pick: Its price is outstanding, but everything else about it is merely good enough. However, it can be difficult to find an affordable printer that does the job well. If you don’t want to spend a lot and have low productivity, the MFC-605DW will suit your needs. With a very affordable upfront price and low ongoing costs, great quality print results, as well as fast speeds, is more important than its limited features and old-school buttons.

Here’s what you need to know: The MFC–J805DW retails for about $120. This printer comes with 1,080 sheets of black and 720 sheets of color. That’s not quite up to the lofty standards of a true ink-tank-style printer , but compare it with the 265 monochrome and 310 color pages that come with the similarly priced HP Office. Brother offers a very generous Jet Pro 8025e. An ultra-high-yield set of cartridges for Brother’s MFC-805DW is usually around $240. This includes sufficient ink to cover 6,000 pages in black or 5,000 in colour. These calculations work out to less then 1C/per-page monochrome or 4.7C/per-page color. Except for ink tank printers, which are generally not our favorite, we were hard pressed to find another printer that could match those numbers.

The print quality is great, too. In our tests, text was dark and sharp, though fonts under about 6 points tended to get a bit blocky, making them tough to read. Graphics popped, if not with quite the same vibrance as we’d get from HP’s ink. Even though the MFC/J805DW doesn’t have borderless printing capabilities, it is capable producing decent glossy photos. The MFC/J805DW has better sharpness than HP and can achieve more realistic saturations and contrasts. The colors did have a warm and greenish hue to them, though, so this might be a problem for sharp-eyed photographers. For casual framing and fridge display, most people will find these results acceptable.

Brother’s installer immediately lets you know this is an old-school printer. It looks like an old-fashioned Windows XP installer. The installer also adds a slew of additional applications to your system tray. Despite this, the MFCJ805DW was easy to print and get online. The machine’s array of big rubber buttons are actually easy to use, and the non-touch color LCD is small but gets the job done. It was slightly harder than entering the Wi-Fi password via the telephone keypad, but it will only be one time.
