While our results with AAA batteries did not compare as well as those of AA batteries we tested, the three-way tie was maintained between the Panasonic Eneloop AAA Energizer Recharge Universal AAA and AmazonBasics AAA Energizer Energizer REcharge Universal AAA. While AmazonBasics AAAs did better than other models in general, they were still not as good as the others. So if you need AAA batteries, we think your best best is to get whichever of these three good options is the cheapest.
How We Picked
The most widely used household batteries are AA, AAA and C. Our favorite charger comes with adapters that turn AAA batteries into C or DC batteries. The best AA and AAA battery chargers were found at well-known retail stores such as AmazonBasics. Duracell. EBL. Goal Zero. IKEA. Panasonic. Powerex. Rayovac. We then narrowed our search based upon the following criteria.
NiMH chemical composition: As it’s the most cutting-edge technology in AA and AAA rechargeable batteries to date , we required that all of our contenders be made of nickel metal hydride (NiMH).
These batteries are sold in sets of either four or eight. If you want to be able to use one battery while charging another set, make sure you remove the charger from the charge. The charger we like can charge four batteries at once so we recommend brands with eight- or four-cell batteries.
Rated to withstand at minimum 1,000 cycles. Many rechargeable batteries can be expected to last for several hundred of cycles. But, to help you find the most durable ones we have limited it to those with ratings between a thousand and a million. Keep in mind, your batteries will likely perform worse after a handful of years, regardless of the number of times you recharge them. The battery’s rated cycle is a measure of its durability.
Labeled as “low self discharge,” “LSD”, or “pre-charged”. All rechargeable batteries have some self-discharge. This means that once they’re fully charged, they lose a bit of their charge. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a battery will be fully charged 100 percent if it isn’t. Some batteries may have a slower self-discharge than others. These are indicated. It can come at a high price, but it is a necessary feature for any model we are testing. Low self-discharge battery have been proven to be usable even after years and months of storage.

Higher capacity batteries allow you to use your television remote more often, illuminate darker corners using your flashlight, and listen to the Walkman’s groovy tracks.
No more than $3 per battery: Since rechargeable batteries aren’t something most people use every day, and you don’t get significant improvements by paying more, we set a hard price cap of $3 per battery. None of the models we considered were cheaper than $1 per battery, and most cost right around $2 per battery.
What’s the best on a budget?
Tenergy If you don’t plan on charging your batteries more than 500 times, the Tenergy Rechargeable NIMH Batteries perform just as well as the major brands but cost less.
The pros include being inexpensive, having a higher capacity than the advertised, and retaining 85% after a year of storage. However, the Tenergy Rechargeable NIMH Battery is the least expensive option in our guide. They still offer many of the same benefits as more costly options. Tenergy batteries have a rating of 2,100mAh. AAAs are listed at 800mAh. But, according to some buyers, the actual capacity is closer to 900 mAh.
Tenergy boasts that these cells can last as long as 500 charge cycles. This is half the life span of comparable brands. These cells may not be the most cost-effective option if you need to recharge them on a regular basis.

According to The New York Times, rechargeable batteries last an average of four years. It is possible to save money on rechargeable battery costs by buying them once in six years.
Not all batteries-powered devices should be using rechargeables.
