As of 2022, Target was not purchased by Walmart. Target Corporation is the new owner of Target Corporation. Target was previously the Dayton-Hudson Corporation. The Corporation operates over 1900 discount and mass-retail stores in all 50 U.S. States under this new (and very popular) name.

Dayton Company created Target to offer a value-oriented shopping experience.
Some industry professionals considered that Target’s move to mass-market retail was risky when it was founded. However, Target had already been established as a retailer of department stores.
The company grew from a small family-run departmental store chain into a major discount retailer in America. It currently operates over 1,900 Target locations across the United States.

The Target Corporation was originally founded in 1902 as the Dayton Dry Goods Company. George D.
Dayton wanted to explore the growing Midwest markets and found Minneapolis to have the strongest opportunities for growth, building his first Dayton Dry Goods Store on Nicollet Avenue.
The first Target store was opened in Roseville in Minnesota in 1962. In 1966 it expanded to Denver.
After many years of expanding across the country, Target Corporation changed its name to Target Corporation to better reflect their core business.

Target also sells groceries as well as household items like bedding, furniture, and can be ordered through both digital and physical channels.

It is well-known enough to be included in Urban Dictionary as the “Target Effect”.
