Even though this amount is just 1% of Walmart’s usual $300 billion in revenue, it still raises the question: How does Walmart prevent shoplifting from happening inside its stores? You might be surprised at the answer.

Walmart to Track Shoplifting 2022

Loss Prevention Associates and surveillance cameras are used by Walmart to track shoplifters. Security scanners can be found at doors starting in 2022. Walmart also uses cameras at self-checkouts AI technology to recognize if an item has not been scanned before being placed in the bag.

Today, Walmart uses image recognition technology supplied by the Irish company Everseen to reduce theft in self-checkouts.

This camera is placed in close proximity to the self-service checkout and cashier of over 1000 stores. It detects shoplifting using AI technology.

The cameras track items instead of people and can detect when an item has been placed in the bag without being scanned first. A member of staff will be notified if the program is flagged.

Additionally, Walmart also uses intercom codes such as Code 300 and Department 51 (among many others) to bring attention to potential shoplifting in-store.

How do you respond if your Walmart shoplifting is caught?

Walmart swiftly presses shoplifter charges. Walmart is also less likely than other shops to drop charges for petty theft. This means that you may be left with a criminal history, making it very difficult to get a job in the future.

Depending on the value of what you stole, you could face up to a year in jail (or more) if someone catches you stealing from Walmart when under 16, they will most likely encourage you to return the items and leave the store.

Walmart doesn’t have to show you the footage of shoplifting.

Walmart can press charges to have the tape turned over to them as evidence. They don’t need to turn it over to shoplifter. You will need a lawyer to help you see the tape.

Walmart Calls The Cops About Shoplifting

Walmart has a shoplifting unit that calls the police. If they detect security camera footage that shows you shoplifting and alarms sound, they’ll call the police and most likely arrest you.

If you suspect you’ve been unfairly accused of shoplifting you should remain calm, and call the police.

The police should be questioned about the security of your store. If nothing comes of that, then you may need to find an attorney. If you feel innocent, you should not sign any documents.

Walmart can also call the police to report anyone caught dumpster diving or trying get pallets off the loading dock.

How do you react when your first Walmart shoplifting arrest results in you being caught?

For children under 16 you will need to return any items. If your parents are not present, they will escort you home. But you might avoid charges.

If you are over 16 and caught shoplifting from Walmart for the first time, it is highly unlikely that you will go to jail. However, you could be still charged with misdemeanors, which will remain permanent on your record.

You’ll also be barred from future Walmart Stores. Shoplifting at Walmart stores again could lead to jail sentence, a fine or probation.

It is common for a second conviction to have much harsher consequences. You could be facing criminal charges, as well as a felony, if you get caught third-time.
