Capacity. The capacity of your pitcher will dictate how often it needs to be refilled and how well it fits in your fridge. For mini fridges at home or in dorms, a 6- to 7-cup pitcher will work well. American National Standards Institute NSF International (ANSI/NSF International) is a private non-profit organization. The two major certifying laboratories are NSF International Water Quality Associations (WQA), which are both accredited by ANSI. It is generally accepted that the greater the number of certifications received from these agencies, the better the product's ability to filter out contaminants. All of the filters included with our pitcher or dispenser picks are certified by these organizations. Brita Standard Filter eliminates chlorine taste and smell, mercury, cadmium and copper, while Brita Longlast Filter gets rid of those substances plus lead, asbestos, and other particulates.
Replacement Filters: Replacing the filters is part of regular maintenance for the pitchers and an ongoing cost to consider. All standard filters that we have included need to replaced within 40 gallons, or approximately every two-months with the Brita Llast Filter. Brita's Longlast Filter filters out more contaminants. This filter takes more time and can be more costly, however, it will last for about six months.
Filtering Time: Probably the most inconvenient aspect of water filter pitchers is the time it takes for the water to filter. Standard filters, which are the ones we recommend using, usually only take about a minute to filter. For the 18-cup dispenser it takes approximately 10 minutes. Your filter time can almost double when you switch to a Brita Longlast lead-reducing filter. The pitcher will not need to be fully filtered every time it is filled. Filter Replacement Indicators. Most pitchers are equipped with a sticker indicator. This allows you to mark when the filter should be changed next. An electronic indicator can cost slightly more. Because most filters come with the same recommendation of a two-month interval, an electronic indicator wasn't considered a top feature. You may not even find the sticker reminder necessary you could simply enter a reminder in your phone, set up reoccurring Amazon orders every two months for a new filter or just leave yourself a note in the kitchen with the date by which you need to replace the filter.

However, all this talk of raw water got us to thinking. Is it true that there are chemicals found in tap water? The short answer is yes, and no. Jonathan Yoder (epidemician and deputy head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch ) explained: "We know tap water is not purified; it's still not sterile. While water is being brought home and treated, it could still contain contaminants that consumers might not be aware of. This includes chlorine and ozone used to disinfect water. When you receive water from your municipal system you will have a good idea of the contaminants and chemicals present. The reason is that water utilities have to give a customer-confidence report. Yoder says that water utilities would be required to list all substances found in their water which have been identified by the EPA as potentially dangerous for human health.
Also, tap water is safe from potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.

My Filtered Water Tastes Different. What do I do?
Water filter pitchers have been designed to get rid of chemicals and contaminants that alter the water smell and taste.
Try flushing the filter again. After that, soak them in hot water for a few hours. You should get rid of any sediment that remains and fix the taste problem. Bad tasting water could indicate that the filters need to be replaced.
How long can water be stored in my filter pitcher for?
If you wish to keep your water fresh, it is best not to store it in your filter pitcher longer than two days. Water can be kept at room temperature. However, avoid heat or direct sunlight. The reason is that fresh water produced by your filter can not only be healthy for you but other life forms such as algae and mold.
You should not store your water in the filter pitcher more than one day. Instead, keep your water in your refrigerator to preserve its freshness.

Does A Water Pitcher Filter Remove Bacteria And Viruses?
These microorganisms can be removed by a pitcher filter. For unclean, well-filtered water, a more sophisticated filtration system like reverse osmosis might work better.
