About Saskatchewan Science Centre

Through interactive, dynamic, and engaging learning experiences, the Saskatchewan Science Centre aims to spark scientific curiosity and creativity in Saskatchewan communities. The Saskatchewan Science Centre, formerly known as the Powerhouse of Discovery, opened in April 1989 in what used to be Regina’s real powerhouse. For almost 25 years, the Science Centre has been producing the power of creativity and imagination in the province instead of electrical power. The Kramer IMAX Theatre, the Saskatchewan Science Centre’s second main attraction, debuted in April 1991. The cinema was converted to IMAX 3D in October 2010 and is now the province’s sole big screen theatre. Saskatchewan Regina, Saskatchewan’s Saskatchewan Science Centre is an interactive science museum. It is a not-for-profit charity organisation that is owned and operated. The Saskatchewan Science Centre, formerly known as the Powerhouse of Discovery, opened in April 1989 in a former power plant called Wascana Centre. The Kramer IMAX Theatre opened in Regina in 1991 as part of the Science Centre’s expansion.

Activities At Saskatchewan Science Centre

By renting our facilities, you may have your next meeting or private event at the Science Centre! Galas, weddings, team-building events, board meetings, and employee appreciation evenings — whatever your event is, we can host it and work with you to make it as distinctive as our venue. Are you no longer a child? That isn’t to say the Science Centre isn’t a good fit for you! At one of our Adult Science Nights, you may enjoy sophisticated programmes as well as a licenced bar. (To attend, you must be 19 years old and have a valid government-issued picture ID.) Our Day Camps provide your kid with the opportunity to develop STEM skills and meet new friends throughout the summer and select school vacations. Through the magic of big screen films, you may be hurled through time and space, go underwater, or even be transported to a distant country by seeing a 3D film at the Kramer IMAX Theatre. Learn about anything from cryogenics to air pressure to the delicious science of sugar by watching live demonstrations at the Space Stadium Stage. The Science Centre’s visiting exhibitions ensure that there is always something fresh to learn about and play with. The science centre has already hosted fascinating exhibits such as Dinosaurs Unearthed and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, and we are delighted to welcome Arctic Voices for the summer of 2015! Over 150 hands-on scientific displays, as well as live stage performances and demonstrations, may be found on the exhibit floor of the Saskatchewan Science Centre. The displays include a wide range of scientific fields, with everything from space to energy to Saskatchewan’s animals on display.

Kalium Observatory

The Saskatchewan Science Centre houses the Kalium Observatory. Please enter via the 2903 Powerhouse Drive Imax entrance. A map may be found by clicking here. Dates & Times for 2020 The 24th and 31st of January February 21st and 28th, March 20th and 27th, April 17th and 24th, May 15th and 22nd, June 19th and 26th, July 17th and 24th, August 14th and 28th, September 11th and 18th, October 16th and 23rd, November 13th and 20th, and December 11th and 18th Rain or shine, the observatory is open, and entrance is free. Please note that there will be no viewing at the dome if there is overcast, rain, strong winds, or cold (-20 C) weather, but you may still inspect the equipment. Please be at the Imax gate for the start of the observation session if you want to visit the observatory. The doors may be locked if you come after the start time. To see whether the circumstances are suitable for observation, look at the Regina clear sky chart to the right. It is an open-air observatory, so dress warmly. Solar and lunar eclipses, comets, occultations of stars by the Moon, shadow transits of Jupiter’s moons over the face of the planet, passes of the International Space Station, and Iridium satellite flares are all visible from Regina. Throughout the year, the Saskatchewan Science Centre’s Kalium Observatory provides FREE public observation. Individuals, families, and small groups of any age are welcome to attend. Volunteers from the RASC Regina Centre run the Kalium Observatory. When visible, the Sun, Moon, planets, double stars, colourful stars, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulas are all frequently seen. The Kalium Observatory is temporarily closed because to the COVID-19 epidemic, in accordance with the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

Principal Activities And Programming

Each year, there are a number of significant events. The reach of Science Centre programming is extended via Adult Science Nights, the After Dark Film Series, and participation at public events like as Canada Day festivities. Aspects of Business that aren’t directly related to the main business Educational Programming- Through the Science Outreach programme, educational and entertaining programmes are provided to schools and communities throughout Saskatchewan, as well as to individuals who are unable to visit the Science Centre. Permanent exhibitions, travelling exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and stage performances may all be found on the exhibit floor. The Kramer Imax Theatre is Saskatchewan’s only one of its type.

Permanent Exhibits

Space Stadium Canada- This exhibit is located in the centre of the exhibit floor and highlights Canada’s contributions to space exploration. The gyro gym, a rotating apparatus similar to one created by NASA astronaut Richardson, is at the centre of the show. Ag-Grow-Land is a company that specialises in agricultural land. This exhibit examines Saskatchewan’s contribution to the world of agriculture, including the high-tech agricultural sector as well as contemporary farming techniques such as food harvesting, processing, and delivery. Science of Hockey – Using science to better understand the sport of hockey, this exhibit includes a mindball game in which visitors may try to move a ball with their brainwaves, time their speed, test their strength, compete against a video goalkeeper, and have their shots on goal assessed. There are also additional permanent exhibits that seek to offer visitors with a combination of fun and knowledge. The Saskatchewan Science Centre includes a number of permanent displays that serve as the center’s backbone. Traveling and temporary exhibitions, as well as special events offered by the Centre from time to time, supplement these exhibits. Barb the bearded dragon and Polly the sugar glider are among the creatures that call the Saskatchewan Science Centre home. Snakes, a great horned owl, and salamanders are all on display at the Science Centre. Outside of the Science Centre lies the Ukrainian Science Park, which is open to the public and is free to use. Children’s science activities include a variety of pulley tunnels and other game-type scientific projects. WILD! Saskatchewan (SK) – The environment is the focus of this interactive display, which explains why people must do more to preserve it.

The Kramer Imax Theatre

Saskatchewan’s biggest movie screen is the Kramer IMAX Theatre. Our IMAX displays ultra-high quality pictures on a screen that is 52′ tall and 73′ wide, thanks to two IMAX 3D 15/70mm film projectors. It’s no surprise that it’s dubbed an IMAX Experience since the audio output is over 10,000 watts.

Hours Of Operation

We are available seven days a week to the general public. Before visiting the Science Centre, please reserve a place online for timed entry or purchase IMAX movie tickets online. While visiting the Science Centre, all visitors are asked to observe the COVID-19 safety procedures.
