History

Following the opening of the hotel in 1927, Government House was no longer required to accommodate official visitors, such as the future King George V and Queen Mary, who visited the Territories in 1901 as Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York; Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, his wife, and their daughter Princess Patricia in 1912; and the Prince of Wales in 1927. Temple Hotels, which owns the Temple Gardens in Moose Jaw, the Saskatoon Inn, and Regina’s Wingate hotel, has announced the acquisition of Hotel Saskatchewan for $32.8 million and a three-year $6 million renovation project. InnVest REIT, a Toronto-based real estate investment trust, announced in July 2015 that it had agreed to buy the hotel for $37 million. The hotel’s connection with the Radisson hotel group was changed to the Marriott Autograph Collection. When the Magnificent Trunk Pacific Railway went bankrupt, a previous effort to build a grand railway hotel for Regina, the Chateau Qu’Appelle, failed. The partially completed Chateau Qu’Appelle on the corner of Albert Street and College Avenue, now the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, sat derelict for several years until Canadian Pacific purchased the disused girders for use in the construction of the Hotel Saskatchewan, and the large excavation was finally filled. The Provincial Museum (formerly the Royal Saskatchewan Museum ) is located at the intersection of College Avenue and Albert Street, but diagonally and significantly back from the streets, owing to the fact that the foundations remained in the ground. Of course, it’s impossible to say if the Chateau Qu’Appelle would still be standing if it had been finished properly, but similar opulent railway hotels in Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto, Saskatoon, Banff Springs, Vancouver Victoria, BC, and elsewhere are still surviving and flourishing.
