Here are 10 states where dentists make the most money

For the purposes of this study, dentists refer to the detailed occupation recognized by the BLS as “dentists, general.” The national average annual wage of a dentist is $175,840, over three times the average annual salary for all occupations, $51,960. Additionally, dentist salaries have grown 6.8% during the last five year, rising from $164,570 per annum in 2013 to now.

There are many factors that affect the average dentist income. While the median dentist salary in most states is $200,000 (in some states it could be up to $50,000 below the national average), the number of states where the average dentist salaries can vary greatly.

Below is a list of the top-10 highest-paying states for dentists:

Delaware average dentist salary: $264,440

Alaska average dentist salary: $259,350

Rhode Island median dentist salary: $254,190

Minnesota average dentist salary: $227,280

New Hampshire average dentist salary: $226,300

Connecticut average dentist salary: $213,390

Ten States where Dentists Make The Most Money

This unusual combination of states is what makes the top 10 lowest-paid dentists in America. There are some understandable southern states like Mississippi and West Virginia that pay dentists less, but they also have lower-than-average incomes for most jobs anyway. California is one of the most surprising states. It has higher incomes than other states for many occupations. Wyoming is unique because there are very few dentists. It has this advantage over dentists working in nearby states. However, Wyoming wages don’t reflect this benefit.

Below are the 10 lowest states in terms of dentist salaries.

Louisiana average dentist salary: $124,020

Wyoming average dentist salary: $125,120

Nebraska average dentist salary: $135,080

Utah average dentist salary: $138,970

West Virginia average dentist salary: $139,170

Dentist Starting Salary

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics the median annual wage of all U.S. dentists was $156,240 in May 2018.

Dentists straight out of dental school won’t be making this amount right away, but they can still earn a relatively high salary at about $120,000 per year ( PayScale ). Although your income as a dentist may vary depending on your place of residence and what you do, it is still lower than the salary for tenured or top-ranking positions.

Richard Gawel

While 2020 was turbulent, dentists saw improvements in 2019. According to BLS, dentists received a median income of $159,000. This was $76.54/hour, an increase of $156,240 and $75.12 respectively.

Beyond the numbers The BLS is also optimistic about the prospects for dentistry after the pandemic. It projects that overall employment will grow by 3% between 2019 and 2029. This is roughly the same rate as all other occupations. The potential for growth is attributed by the bureau to the ageing population.

According to BLS data, baby boomers now have more healthy teeth and require more treatment. These complex procedures will require bridges and implants. A role will also be played by the increased likelihood of developing oral cancer as a result of aging.

Plus, the BLS said, demand for dental services will increase as research continues to link oral health to heart disease, diabetes, and other systemic issues. Dentists will need to provide care and instruction that promotes good oral hygiene, the BLS added, not just fillings.

Job prospects overall will be good, the BLS said, especially for dentists willing to work in underserved areas. However, competition will be affected by the increasing number of graduates from dental school and decreasing retirement rates of dentists, particularly in those areas with sufficient dentists.

Specifically, the BLS expects the total number of dentists to rise from 151,000 in 2019 to 155,000 in 2029, with 3,700 new general dentist positions, 100 new oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and 200 orthodontists. According to the BLS, there is no increase in the number of specialists or prosthodontists.

They also have greater median salaries than general dentistrys. Prosthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and orthodontists all earned a median of $208,000 per year or more and placed fourth through sixth, respectively, on the BLS list of highest paying occupations in 2019. General dentists were fourteenth with a median of $155,600.

It is also important to consider geography. Rhode Island had the highest average income of general dentists at $262,900. This was followed by Vermont with $261,790 and Alaska with $239.930. North Dakota earned $225,770 while North Dakota made $225,770. Maine received $220,400.

Warner Robins (Georgia) was number one with an undisclosed amount. Burlington-South Burlington Vermont came second, $278,360. Longview Texas took third at $272.440. Olympia Turnwater Washington was fourth at $267.240.

Auxiliary Careers Dental assistants are key to the care of patients, and for ensuring that they have healthy outcomes. They enjoyed a median salary of $76,220 per year or $36.65 per hour in 2019, which is an increase over 2018’s $74,820 and $35.97 figures. BLS expects an additional 6% increase in jobs between 2019-2029 and 13,300 new positions.

Students Debt Repayments on A Dentist’s Salaary

Student debt is a problem even if your dentist income is six figures. While lenders may have mortgages and small business loans that look past a dentist’s debt-to-income ratio, for example, your monthly student loan bills could still hurt your cash flaw.

In addition, you could be paying thousands in interest for dental school loans. A $292,169 average balance would result in $115,000 per year of interest at a 7% rate over ten years.

You could potentially free up additional cash, become debt-free faster and save on interest in the long run by refinancing to a lower interest rate. A 5% interest rate would save you more than $35,000 per year compared to the 7% rate.

It is not right for all people to refinance their dental school loans. If you refinance federal students loans, you will lose benefits from government loans like income-driven payment. To find the best solution, evaluate all of your options for repayment on dental school loans.

Is A Dental Career Worth It?

We will go beyond the topic to discuss all pros and cons in pursuing a profession as a dentist. It’s important to ask the fundamental question, “Will the income make all the difference?”

Data from Student Loan Hero shows that dentists will spend an average $570,000 on their education. This amount includes the principal and interest on student loan, as well $220,000 in lost earnings potential. (This is money that could have been made after graduation instead of paying for dental school). These experts also predict that the majority of dentists will return their investment in approximately 8 years.

This is great news. It means that in the long-term, education and training are worthwhile. Even after the loans are paid off, dentists can still reap the rewards. They make $90,000 less than if they had a bachelor’s degree.

The benefits available to dentists will vary depending on their location. Some dentists are eligible for stock options or other benefits in addition to their base salary. This is especially true for DSO dentists like Heartland Dental. A lot of research shows that dentists who are able to help patients instead of managing their billing, appointments, marketing and the like is more happy. There’s also evidence to support this claim. Another benefit of DSO support is that dentists report having a predictable work schedule and more time to spend with their families.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
