Do Dentists Know if I Have Smoked Weed? Yes, the Answer is “No!”

Your dentist won’t be able to tell if your mouth is contaminated by weed unless you stop smoking right before visiting your dental office.

But your dentist could be able detect if you smoke. Tobacco and marijuana have similar effects. Regular use of marijuana can cause a variety of oral health problems.

Dry mouth – Dry mouth, also called “xerostomia,” can be caused by the use of medical marijuana. Similar to tobacco products, cannabis can also impair saliva flow. This leads to higher chances of tooth decay and gum disease.

Tooth discoloration. Tooth stains from marijuana are often milder that those caused by tobacco. If you are a heavy weed smoker, stains may tip off your dentist that you smoke tobacco or weed.

Higher risk of developing oral cancer. Despite marijuana being illegal in the US, not much research has been done on whether or not cannabis contributes to this form of cancer. A few studies, however, have found that marijuana smoking can increase oral cancer risk, but to a lesser degree than tobacco.

Parkside Family Dental recommends that you tell Dr. Larsen if you are using marijuana to treat medical conditions. By doing this, you can get a better treatment plan that suits your needs and protects your dental health.

How can dentists tell you if your smoke marijuana?

Yes. If you do smoke marijuana, your dentist can help.

A TikTok video by Huzefa Kapadia, a dentist, and Iman Zayed shows that they are able to detect certain signs associated with cannabis smoking. Even though we’ve outlined a couple of conditions in the section above, the TikTok video only spoke about a couple of them.

The first sign is gum inflammation. If your gums are inflamed you may notice swelling and redness.

A dry mouth can cause tooth decay. Kapadia said that “we see quite some decay due to dry lips”.

Third sign could be oral cancer. Although there are no conclusive studies linking marijuana smoking to oral cancer, they do not appear to be a cause. Pubmed claims that cannabis smoke causes oral cancer.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
