Our selections were balanced between a reasonable price and a broad range of features. If any mower is not yet tested by us, we will update the review to include our impressions once we test them.
The majority of mowers that we chose are powered with gasoline engines, ranging from 21 to 24 horses. As much as possible, we also note the transmission. The most common transaxle is the Hydrogear EZT. This well-known, durable, and affordable residential-grade transaxle has a good reputation. Some mowers use a deck stamped from one piece of metal, others use a deck fabricated from multiple pieces and welded together. The benefit of a fabricated deck? Manufacturers can provide a deck made out thicker steel for a fraction of the cost. Once you’re talking about stamping metal as thick as 10 gauge (about 1/8 inch thick), the cost of the deck alone can push up the mower’s price beyond what most people are willing to pay. These decks are available in sizes from 42 inches to 52 inches. These are the most common sizes for this category of products. When powered by these engines and the Hydrogear, these mowers will deliver a decent cut quality at their rated top speed of seven miles per hour. The cut quality of these machines can be affected if it is difficult to maintain the same speed on very dense grass or in uneven terrain.
These electric mowers are the most advanced in their category. They are powerful and costly mowers that use large-voltage lithium-ion battery technology. These mowers are great for reducing noise levels and simplifying maintenance, eliminating the need to use oil or gas.
These 48-52 inch deck zero turn mowers are the best choice for you.
The 48-52-inch to 52 inch zero-turn mowers are great for mowing 3/4-acres to three acres. This mower is small enough that it can be used to quickly mow the lawn and maneuver around most obstacles. The mowers can trim better around obstacles than ZTRs of 42 inches. This ZTR is more agile due to its larger frame and bigger tires. It turns faster and doesn’t tear up turf.
All the mowers that I list here are in a different class than what Consumer Reports tests. All fabricated deck mowers mow well and mulch well with bolt-in mulch kit options. Many models have rear baggers. The fabricated deck mowers are built well, rugged and will last you many years. The heavy-duty mowers will be your last one.
* My definition of mulching well: For example, Bluegrass/Fescue/Perineal Ryegrass lawns. The cut height is 3-4 inches. You can use the fabricated deck mowers to cut 2-3 inches additional growth into small particles, and add those pieces to your lawn. You might have to mow less often during the summer months when grass grows quickly. If you are unable to mow as often, switch to side discharge until your grass grows slower. Here are some points that will help you decide if a 48-52 inch zero turn is the best choice for you:
More efficient mowing: If you have a lawn that is anywhere between 1 to 3 acres.
At 3-4 MPH, a 42-inch mower will mow approximately one acre per hour.
The 42-inch Zero-turn mower will mow 1 1/2 acres at 5-6 MPH.
A 48-52 inch zero-turn will mow between 2 1/2 and 4 acres an hour at 6-9 MPH.
