Brita Everyday 10-Cup Filter Pitcher for Small Kitchens

For your family's health and well-being, it is vital to have clean drinking water. A water filter pitcher makes this possible. This is an important factor to take into consideration when purchasing a water filters pitcher.

Capacity. The capacity of your pitcher will dictate how often it needs to be refilled and how well it fits in your fridge. For mini fridges at home or in dorms, a 6- to 7-cup pitcher will work well. An average pitcher size is between 10 and 11 cups for families or couples. An 18-cup dispenser will make life easier for large families who go through a lot of water or just anyone who wants to go longer periods between needing to refill a pitcher or dispenser.

ANSI/NSF Standards & Certifications For Filters. Whether you need your pitcher to taste better or reduce the risk of downstream contamination (the EPA claims this is a more serious concern for those homes that have older piping, built before 1986), the best way to find out what a pitcher filters is to review the industry standards they adhere to. American National Standards Institute NSF International (ANSI/NSF International) is a private non-profit organization. The two major certifying laboratories are NSF International Water Quality Associations (WQA), which are both accredited by ANSI. It is generally accepted that the greater the number of certifications received from these agencies, the better the product's ability to filter out contaminants. All of the filters included with our pitcher or dispenser picks are certified by these organizations. Brita Standard Filter eliminates chlorine taste and smell, mercury, cadmium and copper, while Brita Longlast Filter gets rid of those substances plus lead, asbestos, and other particulates.

Replacement Filters: Replacing the filters is part of regular maintenance for the pitchers and an ongoing cost to consider. All standard filters that we have included need to replaced within 40 gallons, or approximately every two-months with the Brita Llast Filter. Brita's Longlast Filter filters out more contaminants. This filter takes more time and can be more costly, however, it will last for about six months.

Filtering Time: Probably the most inconvenient aspect of water filter pitchers is the time it takes for the water to filter. Standard filters, which are the ones we recommend using, usually only take about a minute to filter. For the 18-cup dispenser it takes approximately 10 minutes. Your filter time can almost double when you switch to a Brita Longlast lead-reducing filter. The pitcher will not need to be fully filtered every time it is filled. This won't bother you unless your pitcher runs out and you have an immediate water problem. Our pick for large dispensers is that you can simultaneously filter more water and dispense it.

Filter Replacement Indicators. Most pitchers are equipped with a sticker indicator. This allows you to mark when the filter should be changed next. An electronic indicator can cost slightly more. Because most filters come with the same recommendation of a two-month interval, an electronic indicator wasn't considered a top feature. You may not even find the sticker reminder necessary you could simply enter a reminder in your phone, set up reoccurring Amazon orders every two months for a new filter or just leave yourself a note in the kitchen with the date by which you need to replace the filter.

Is There Anything Wrong With Tap Water (And What Should You Buy To Filter It)?

Photo: American Stock/Classic. Stock/Getty Images The reason people in Silicon Valley are spending $36 for 2.5 gallons of unfiltered raw water in shapely glass bottles is fear, but not of contracting a waterborne disease like cholera. It is actually a fear about chemical contamination in the municipal tap-water supplies that has led to raw-water trends. Live Water's founder said that the company bottles and markets untreated, unfiltered water. Toilet water is laced with birth control drugs… chloramine and fluoride. I don't know if it is a conspiracy theory, but it is a mind-control drug which has no benefit for our dental health." His fellow raw water acolytes also agree.

However, all this talk of raw water got us to thinking. Is it true that there are chemicals found in tap water? The short answer is yes, and no. Jonathan Yoder (epidemician and deputy head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch ) explained: "We know tap water is not purified; it's still not sterile. While water is being brought home and treated, it could still contain contaminants that consumers might not be aware of. This includes chlorine and ozone used to disinfect water. When you receive water from your municipal system you will have a good idea of the contaminants and chemicals present. The reason is that water utilities have to give a customer-confidence report. Yoder says that water utilities would be required to list all substances found in their water which have been identified by the EPA as potentially dangerous for human health.

Also, tap water is safe from potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.

Yoder talks with you about how to identify the best water filters for your needs. (A quick disclaimer here: It's against CDC policy to recommend specific products or brands, so all recommendations are my own, not the government agency's or Yoder's.) Brita 10 ounce Everyday water pitcher with one filter. If you've used any of the pitcher-style water filters from Duane reade, chances are it adjusted what Yoder called "aesthetics." Chlorine is used in water-treatment plants to remove bacteria. This can cause a distinctive smell. You don't have to feel guilty about trying to eliminate it. Yoder states that the chlorine treatment will have "hopefully done it's job" in protecting water from chlorine-treated water. So removing the chlorine won’t change the quality. If you are trying to get rid of the chlorine-like smell or to make the water more neutral tasting, then most water filters available, such as a Brita and a Soma will work fine. Both models were tested for chlorine removal by independent water quality agencies.

What is the life expectancy of water filter pitchers?

Your pitcher's shelf life is not guaranteed. The pitcher should be washed with hot, soapy water. You need to change any filters, clean the unit, take care of it and it will serve you well for many years.

Your pitcher's filters themselves have a lifespan of around 1 to 2 months,or up to 6 months if you pay for longer-lasting filters. Regularly changing your pitcher's filters will ensure that your entire system is as durable as possible.

How long can water be stored in my filter pitcher for?

If you wish to keep your water fresh, it is best not to store it in your filter pitcher longer than two days. Water can be kept at room temperature. However, avoid heat or direct sunlight. The reason is that fresh water produced by your filter can not only be healthy for you but other life forms such as algae and mold.

You should not store your water in the filter pitcher more than one day. Instead, keep your water in your refrigerator to preserve its freshness.

Does A Water Pitcher Filter Remove Bacteria And Viruses?

These microorganisms can be removed by a pitcher filter. For unclean, well-filtered water, a more sophisticated filtration system like reverse osmosis might work better.

The water filter pitcher is still an option if you do not want your water to be contaminated. However, it's possible to disinfect well-water using a different process before or after the filter has been run through. One way of doing this is by boiling your water in a pan for at least one minute. To make your water safe, you can add household bleach. However, it is important to follow the online directions.

How does the Filter Pitchers Function?

Many use carbon filtration for their primary filter media. These filter cartridges use activated, catalytic carbon in block and granular forms to absorb impurities.

Ion exchange is also used by more sophisticated pitchers. This can be useful for the removal of fluoride and heavy metals.

KDF pitcher filters may be available to control microorganisms.

Filter Types

There are a variety of different filter types, including 1-stage, 2-stage, or 3-stage cartridge-based filters, and reverse osmosis systems.

The cartridge is a whole-house filter that uses a replacement cartridge to eliminate contaminants. It can remove particles from 0.04 up to 500 microns. You can choose from sediment, heavy metal, or organic chemical cartridges. The cartridges can vary depending on what the homeowner needs.

The 1-stage whole-house filter has a single tank with a sediment-filter cartridge. These filters are the most common whole-house water filtration system. They can however be used to reduce heavy metals.

Two filtration tanks are required for 2-stage whole-house water filter systems. The specific type of contaminants removed from the water will depend on the filter cartridge being used. These systems typically filter dirt, sediment, chlorine, dirt, and rust.

– 3-stage whole-house water filters need a lot of space to set up, but they have three filtration tanks that can each be equipped with a different type of filter to remove organic matter, pesticides, chlorine, unnatural tastes, odors, heavy metals, algae, microorganisms, iron, lead, dirt, sand, rust, and more. These are the most effective options for cartridge filters.

Reverse osmosis wholehouse water filters perform better than cartridges and can remove particles down to 0.0001 millimeters. The whole-house reverse osmosis water filters remove any organic molecules or viruses. They also purify the water to make it pure. However, reverse osmosis whole-house water filters are very expensive to install and maintain. This is why these systems aren’t well-known and it can prove difficult to obtain them without asking a supplier. Reverse-osmosis water filters with single faucets are a popular option that is also more cost-effective.

Filters

Clear2O filters (the CWF50XX, GRF20X), where "X” denotes how many filters are in the pack, have not been certified to ANSI/NSF standards. Clear2O states that their filters were "independently evaluated on over 200 contaminants to attain water industry 42, 53 and other standards for reductions Chlorine, Heavy Metalss, Cysts & Other contaminants." We do not believe this is true.

Soma Filter is certified to ANSI/NSF Standard 42 for taste and ANSI/NSF 53 for copper, cadmium, and mercury. The Brita Pitcher Filter and Dispenser filter are identical, however the Soma is more expensive. Brita’s Longlast filter as well the two Pur filters has more certifications below 42 and 53. The pur filters also have 401 certifications, which is something that the Soma does not possess. While the Longlast filter is less expensive and can withstand 120 gallons compared to 40, the Pur filters are much cheaper and can withstand 40 gallons.

Zero. The water pitcher filter has been ANSI/NSF certified for 7 total contaminants, which includes lead. Its capacity is 20 gallons, while the other filters recommended have a maximum of 40 gallons. The cost of a Zero makes this even more apparent. Water filter: about $15. Brita and Pur both do more with a fraction of their cost. Zero. Water has the claim of removing 100% of water's "total-dissolved solids". This basically refers to minerals. It was confirmed in tests conducted by us in 2016, but this isn't necessarily a positive thing.

According to World Health Organization (PDF), higher TDS is associated with lower cancer incidence and heart disease. Brita Stream's filter only removes chlorine and odor. Brita Stream is not certified to remove organic compounds or heavy metallics according to ANSI/NSF Standard 52. As such, our specifications are not met. The filter is only compatible with Brita's three Stream pitchers. It will not fit on Brita Stream or other Brita pitchers.

Mavea is no more in North America.

Do I need to be concerned about certain contaminants?

It comes down to whether you care more about the water's quality or its taste. To improve your water taste, you can use a chlorine water filtration system (preferably one that is NSF-certified for chlorine reduction) to remove chlorine taste from the water. You should look out for water filters specifically designed to remove high levels of lead in your water. You may want to remove all lead from your water, even though it isn’t as dangerous in small quantities. You should also be aware of other contaminants like pesticides, herbicides, arsenic and mercury, as well as microorganisms such bacteria and viruses that can easily get into your water supply.

Is it necessary to have a whole house water filter?

One can obtain water both from their municipal well or the one they have from their own backyard. It doesn't matter where you get your water, it can always be better. To find out about water quality, it's possible to test it prior to its being processed by the filtration systems.

For testing water, your senses will be well-equipped. The water can be analyzed for strange smells or tastes. You can also assess if it is chlorinated, whether there are particles in it, and if it is cloudy. It is possible to buy a test set that will allow you to analyze the water yourself at home.

The whole house water filtration system will reduce the problems if your careful observation uncovers all of these abnormalities.
