What should I look for when choosing a dentist?
You and your dentist will be long-term oral health care partners; therefore, you should find someone you can be comfortable with. To find a suitable dentist to meet your needs, consider asking the following questions as a starting point:
Are they open on Sundays? They are convenient for your work schedule.
Are you able to reach the office from your home or work?
Where was the dentist educated and trained?
How does a dentist approach preventive dentistry?
What percentage of dentists attend continuing education and conferences?
Which type of anesthesia can a dentist administer to make you feel relaxed and more comfortable while you undergo any dental procedure?
Are there any arrangements for emergencies that are not covered by office hours? In the event of an emergency situation, many dentists can make arrangements with colleagues or an emergency referral service.
Do you have information about any fees or payment plans? You can compare shop for prices on procedures like full-mouth radiographs, an oral examination and cleaning, or filling a hole.
Is there a policy for missed appointments at the dentist?
Factor #1: Do You Have This Provider in Your Dental Insurance Network
US readers, dental insurance may play a role in your decision to choose a dentist. You don’t have the same benefits as your medical health insurance so I am going to show you how to make it work.
Your healthcare provider will have a list with participating dentists in your area if you are unsure. It is usually found either on the site of your health insurance or by your employer. HR can also be a useful place to begin. It can be a good starting point for finding the best dentist for your loved ones.
No dental insurance? Problem solved! How to Keep up with regular dental appointments without having dental insurance. It is actually not that difficult. These are some great questions that I have been asked about finding a dentist within your insurance system.
1. What happens if my current dentist is not available in my network, and I still feel happy with them?
Do not stop going to your dentist.
To understand why this is probably the best choice, it’s important to know that dental prices are not standardized like medical charges.
Providers who are part of an in-network network agree to a contract where they accept a lower salary than they would hope for in return for their inclusion in that network. It’s not a large fee and many providers find it worthwhile. But, even if you’re not within the network you have legal rights to charge what you choose.
These are two choices I recommend in the following order:
Present your updated dental insurance plan. Ask them if they would accept any amount that the insurance company pays. Then, you can write off the rest. You could end up paying more for your dental benefits than you are able to pay. This is especially true if there is major work involved.
In-network fees are a set of prices that normalize all dental codes and what they will accept from each insurance company. This arrangement is generally accepted by the majority of offices. The result? You will be charged similar fees with your existing dentist to those you pay if you move to an IN-NETWORK provider.
Factor 2: Do You Select a Dentist who’s a Member of The Ada?
Many insurance programs and other resources (websites) offer coverage. The American Dental Association will recommend only that you visit a licensed or accredited dentist. There are many other ways to locate a top-quality dentist.
I’m a member of AADSM, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. See my bio for the complete list. While I don’t consider myself an ADA-registered dental professional, their suggestions on fillings with fluoride are sound. The association is a leader in research, training, and attention to the field of dental sleep medicine. This includes treating and reverse sleeping disorders.
If you feel more comfortable speaking with an ADA registered dentist than with one of the others, it’s perfectly fine. You might also be interested in these organizations:
Academy of General Dentistry American Academy for Oral Systemic Health
Be aware that all these academies require a dentist to pay for their membership. While each member commits to adhering to any dental academy’s code and treatment guidelines, the association doesn’t regulate them. They do, however, have to keep up with that organization’s continuing education.
A dentist’s board certification and registration at their state’s board of dentistry is far more important than what academies it belongs to.
So, should you choose a dentist who’s a member of the ADA? Not necessarily. You might consider partnering with a dental specialist from one the sleep medicine academy if you suspect you suffer with sleep apnea and bruxism. AAOSH dentist may suit you better if you care more about how dental problems can impact your overall well-being.
You don’t reside in the US. For your specific needs, organizations like the British Dental Association Canadian Dental Association Australian Dental Association might be able help.
Factor #3: Are You Looking For A Functional Dentist?
My family dentistry practice specializes in functional dentistry. I also practice and encourage it. This is a holistic approach to dental care that aims to fix problems right at the source (no pun intended). treat each person holistically, as well as understanding the importance of dental health in relation to overall health.
The functional dentist offers more than regular cleanings and fillings. They will also educate you about how to maintain your smile between visits. Do you have a primary concern for your children’s oral health? Although pediatric dentists have to go through the same training as all other dentists in dentistry, the offices they run are tailored for children. You may find other dental offices that specialize in family dentistry to be great options, depending on which dentist you choose.
When looking for the best office to work in, be sure that you have your child(ren) with. This will give you the opportunity to make a good first impression. You can learn more about how to choose a good dentist especially for your child. Did you suffer from frequent cavities, or have you ever had to undergo more involved procedures (e.g. dental surgeries and implants)? There are many dentists who share a practice with a specialist who performs root canals and other more extensive oral procedures. A referral program may be available with an endodontist in your area.
You may be in severe pain and need a dentist to make an appointment for you today. You are not ready to commit to a long-term dental practice but you still need immediate relief. You might consider a nearby dental school. Students must learn how to deal with emergencies, and dental schools frequently offer immediate care.
For your oral or dental concerns, there are many options. And unlike dental insurance which requires referrals to be covered, dental insurance generally doesn’t need to have a referral. For your specific concerns, here are some specialist you could consider instead of seeing a general dentist.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy.
