Beckett Simonon Durant Oxford Review: A Sharp-Looking Shoe At An Excellent Price
Ben Robinson Beckett Simonon, a brand which I became interested in years before Stitchdown was founded, is one that I still love. They have a lot of beautiful shoe designs, their prices (while they’ve risen over time) are very attractive at $199/219 for boots and $149/GATs Other Sneakers ), and people who’ve worn them before me had good things to say. So when (full disclosure) they offered to send me a pair of their Durant oxford brogues to test for a review, I did not say no.
A pair of shoes costing $200 would have been a bargain if you bought something with second-rate leather. These shoes, which were glue-glued and likely to break down very quickly, were not common in the past.
Today, that’s all changed. A good place to start is $200. But $300-$350 can buy you some pretty nice shoes. Shoes that are stylish, comfortable, durable, and that provide all of the benefits that make footwear worthwhile. This movement’s main driving force is the direct-to consumer business model. It aims to eliminate all retail markups, and more often the retail store costs, and then pass the savings onto you, the previously overpriced and beleaguered consumer.
But of course that doesn’t suddenly make every pair of $200 shoes great. Many of them are actually quite poor! Perhaps they are savvily marketing on Instagram. Or maybe they take beautiful photographs. However, none of this means they can make shoes. Stitchdown has the expertise to help you choose high-quality footwear regardless of price.

Adding some much-needed style to our footwear with the help of Beckett Simonon.
When we visited Milan last summer, I was struck by the exquisite leather shoes worn by all of Milan’s men. This made me feel like I was upgrading my beloved New Balance sneakers.
Although we are backpackers, spending $300 to $400 on nice shoes is hard for me.
Beckett Simonon approached me a while back to ask if I would like to test out their leather shoes or boots.
I normally wouldn’t openly consider this type of collaboration because Beckett Simonon shoes don’t seem to be budget-friendly to me. However, for $149 to $1229 the price seemed really reasonable.
So I thought this was a nice opportunity to review a pair of boots from Beckett Simonon in case any of you are wanting to travel with a nice pair of shoes. Furthermore, I’d actually heard good things about Beckett Simonon on the Male Frugal Fashion Male Fashion Subreddits so that also helped make my decision.

High Quality & Beautiful Looks
Beckett Simonon makes full grain leather. This is the same type of leather you will find in expensive boots, i.e. It is the finest grade of leather.

All-Day Shoes
Cohen Loafers As New Shoes is often reviewed in perfect condition on many blogs. It is very rare to observe how these shoes wear as they age. Having reviewed many pairs of Beckett Simonon, we decided to revisit the pairs that we wear the most.
You can see in the image above the Cohen penny loafers fresh out of their box. While they’re not my favorite Beckett Simonon shoe, I love their simplicity and use them almost every day.
Indeed, they live by my front door and I’ll often throw them on and off when nipping out to run daily errands. I will be completely honest and say that my shoes tend to get neglected, particularly the ones I use most.
Cohen Loafers After Two Years Of Daily Wear Although some pairs worn for special occasions are treated quite well, the majority are kicked around. Also, my clumsiness is as neglectful as it is negligent, two attributes that work well together.
However, Beckett Simonon’s Cohen loafers are still doing well despite this. They have a deep patina thanks to the high-quality Argentinian calfskin leather uppers. This can be easily maintained with some attention.
The soles may show wear over time, but are unlikely to need to be resoled anytime soon.
Closing Thoughts
Beckett Simonon Yates Brogues Although many brands will often talk about “disrupting the fashion industry” or creating a “paradigm shift”, Beckett Simonon is one of the few that actively seeks to fulfil its promise in such a significant way.
Additionally, its shoes are honestly priced and present fantastic value for money as described above. These shoes are durable and can withstand abuse while maintaining their shape. They will likely last decades if you take care of them.

Adela cardona Puerta was the brand relations manager at Beckett Simonon. I received a proposal from her: She wanted me to get a complimentary pair of shoes. I knew that I would love them. After explaining the Menswear Musings’ product policy, she informed me that I would need to provide a fair review. So, we had some discussions about my measurements and preferences, and she placed me on their list to get a pair Durant Oxford cap toe shoes.

From that point, it took about 2 months for them to deliver my shoes at January’s beginning. Beckett Simonon has no stock, but they do submit mass orders to the factories once per month for all of their sales. This is part of the reason their shoes are so valuable. They say that inventory costs add another layer to the overall cost, which can increase your final price. Inventory takes up space in warehouses, and this is added onto the final cost structure. Also, it requires significant upfront investment. This must be backed-up by high profit margins. It makes perfect sense to me. Although I cannot speak for them at this level as I’ve not tried to operate a large shoe manufacturing enterprise. Their lower prices may also be due to the fact that they use factories in countries where the living wages are still lower than in the United States. All their products are manufactured in Bogota (Colombia); full grain leather is used, which is good but not the best; and direct sales rather than through wholesale channels.
The business models don’t really matter if the product they sell isn’t well worth the price. I’m happy to report that indeed, these shoes are worth the asking price. To write my review I waited approximately a month, and then I wore them at least twice per week to observe how they wear over time. Even though I don’t know how long they’ll last, I was impressed with their performance after about a month.
It is extremely clean and has no random, stray stitching. This was something that I have seen on shoes of this price. It seems very good quality leather. It is full-grain, that is it was not manufactured using inferior leather skins. Adela says it was tanned in Hurlingham (Argentina). “We have an excellent relationship with a small family owned and run operation that has passed down the art of tanning hides for generations. They are respected among the top tanneries worldwide,” she added.
Blake/Rapid-stitched, which means they can be resoled (though maybe not by a random local guy And the welt goes around the entire shoe, heel included (a 360-degree welt, as it’s called). While this can occasionally add some weight and bulk to overall slimness, it’s not a problem as the heel cup of these shoes is quite narrow.
The last shape is probably my favorite aspect of these shoes: not too pointy, but it tapers beautifully with a round tip nothing against a slight chisel toe, but these look perfect to me for a quintessential closed-lacing dress shoe. Adela said that they use one last for their dress shoes and another for casual shoes.
