Model #3: Oru Kayak Coast Xt

ORU Coast XT Model. Photo Credit: Oru Kayak Company. Oru Kayak Coast XT models are the best. They can withstand extreme winds and even surf. Although this kayak is ideal for Pros who are looking for adventure, it can also be comfortable. The Coast XT offers incredible comfort and control with its adjustable backrest and footrest as well as thigh braces and a thigh brace.

Even with it’s impressive length of 16 feet, this kayak folds into a compact shape that makes it easy to store and take on the go. Not only is it perfect for flatwater excursions on lakes and slow rivers, but the hard-chine hull also responds well to braced turns and edging. The Coast XT also comes equipped with additional deck straps, lines and rigging to hold gear.

The durable polypropylene material makes it extremely puncture- and abrasion-resistant and is easy to fold and unfold in minutes. You can easily take the Coast XT with you on your trip.

Oru Bay is a kayak that’s designed and constructed to make the most of your kayak and life.

The next section in this Oru kayak review will focus on how and where the funding came from for this origami kayak.

It’s worth the $$ to dig out The Oru Bay Kayak.

Although it is not inflatable, the Oru Bay kayak can be folded and unfolded like origami. You’ll be surprised to learn that it is also foldable! There’s no carrying case, per se, other than the neat fact that the when you fold the Oru Bay+ Kayak up, it itself becomes a carrying case.

The Oru Bay kayak measures 12 feet. Keep in mind that it will probably take you, on average, 15-30 minutes to assemble it. You will need to do it the first time. After that, it may take around 25 minutes.

Amazon’s Oru Bay Kayak is available!

This seems to be a fairly average time, considering that most inflatable kayak reviews on this site indicate around 15 minutes for assembly (inflation/deflation). (Keep in mind that the Oru kayak falls under the origami kayak category, not inflatable!) Although this kayak may be more costly for novices, it’s still worth considering if you are a keen amateur kayaker. Our Oru kayak review will discuss the feel of the ride:

Do You Feel The Oru Bay Kayak Is Good to Ride in?

The Oru Bay kayak is light and responsive, despite its featherweight. The Oru Kayak’s performance is compared to that of a hard, traditional kayak in many reviews. While you can’t ignore that the cockpit is a very tight fit and takes a bit of getting used to, neither can one ignore how well it performs.

Even though the cockpit can be deemed as as tight fit, it is very important to also know that in no way does it feel uncomfortable thanks to its high back seat.

The original Kickstarter project seems to be a win-win for all.

Kayaking is something I love. I find it relaxing to paddle down rivers and marshes in summer. This activity makes me feel energetic and connects me with nature.

The stress of kayaking isn’t the only thing. You will need to drag these 12-foot-long boats to the water.

Oru Kayak It’s the original origami kayak. This kayak folds up to make it easy to carry to the water. It was gifted to me by my parents.

What’s the Oru Kayak?

Credit: Courtney Campbell Reviewed. The Oru Kayak is made of one sheet of correlative plastic and folds as an origami.

Oru Kayaks was originally a Kickstarter project that was funded on the first day. It is made from a single sheet, lightweight, flexible, buoyant, hard-core corrugated plastic, specifically 5mm doublelayered polypropylene. They come folded up in a convenient carrying case and ready to ride, and they are assembled “origami-style” by bending and clipping folds together.

Beach LT is a model specifically made for flatwater recreation. You can do some casual “yakking” in rivers and lakes, but the Beach LT model was specifically made for flatwater recreation. There are four other models available in different sizes and features that will work in rougher waters and even in the ocean. It measures 12 feet in length and folds into a rectangle-shaped cube that is about the same size as a suitcase. However, it’s not nearly as big than a normal kayak. This kayak can easily be folded into a small container that fits in your car trunk or closet, which makes it ideal for those who don’t have a lot of space.

This kayak is only available in white with orange accents. It looks sharp and modern in the water so it’s not a problem. You will need to buy the Oru paddle separately in order to use the kayak. It can be broken down into 4 pieces, and stored in the box. You can also bring another paddle, but it will make the kayak experience more portable.

How easy is it to build an Oru Kayak?

Credit: Courtney Campbell. The Oru Kayak construction took approximately 10 minutes.

I currently live on an island, where only golf carts (and a handful of service vehicles) are the primary means for transportation. It was approximately 25 pounds. To transport it to the water I strapped the kayak to my golf car and rode the 10-minute journey to the marsh. It fit in my golf cart easily, as it is much smaller than many car trunks. As for the carrying part, I’ll be honest: it’s not terribly heavy, but I couldn’t imagine having it on my shoulder for more than five minutes before experiencing some serious discomfort.

These kayaks should be assembled in just a few minutes according to Oru. I’m not sure if that is true, as it took me seven minutes plus some assistance from others to put mine together. And this comes after building several standing desks.

I watched the Oru Kayak’s 10 minute how-to video. I was apprehensive about how the kayak would fit together after it had been folded. It does not come with instructions but it is still helpful to look at how someone builds something.

The assembly of the Oru took me less time than I expected. This did not occur. Once unfurled, the bends created when the kayak was folded make it pretty obvious on where to bend the corrugated plastic and clips that are lined up to create the water-tight seal. It also has straps which can hold everything together. This assures me that it would be able to float.

The entire process took less than ten minutes and was comparable to the energy it would take me to drag a heavy, plastic kayak to the water.

Are The Oru Kayaks Water-Resistant?

Credit: Courtney Campbell Reviewed. The Oru glided effortlessly on water because of its light weight.

I was nervous when I first got into the Oru Kayak. It’s pretty thin, and I was worried that it would flip over the second I stepped into the little boat. After crouching low and placing one foot from the dock onto the kayak, I felt how sturdy it was. It didn’t tip to one side as I got myself in, and I stayed dry this time, folks.

The Beach LT model is light, but it can hold up to 300 lbs. It was ample enough to carry Mila my mini Australian shepherd safely.

I was immediately impressed by the Oru’s smoothness on the water once I learned how to paddle. I felt myself traveling a bit faster than usual, even when I was fighting the slight current of the marsh. This is due to the lightweight of this boat. This boat is lighter, which means it takes less time. It made for an extremely enjoyable 30-minute trip.

As you can see, getting out of the kayak was very simple. Just grabbed the dock edge and pulled myself out of the kayak without much effort. The 25-pound kayak was lifted out of the water without any difficulty, even when I had tired arms.

Putting the Oru back into its box form was easier than transforming it into a kayak. The folds were easy to understand and there were two bullseyes that indicate which direction to put the sides. This was quite a relief, considering the exhaustion that can result from a prolonged kayaking session.

Is The Oru Kayak Worth Your Money?

Credit: Reviewed / Courtney Campbell The Oru was light enough to carry for a few minutes.

If you’re willing to shell out the cash, the Oru Kayak ideal for any adventurer with a small space. They’re small enough to fit in a small apartment and are ideal for traveling, as they can fit on planes, trains, and boats for cross-country or even international kayaking. Oru would look great in my little apartment near Boston.

The Oru Kayak Pack is a backpack made of nylon that can hold the Oru folded up snugly. It’s ideal for traveling with the kayak. This isn’t essential for traveling short distances but it’s important if you’re going to be flying or hiking long distances with the kayak.

Assembling the Oru Kayak Haven

Pre-creased lines are placed on the hull to quickly fold into a kayak-like shape. Then, clip it together using neoprene ends caps, nylon straps, and plastic buckles. The hull is modern and minimalist, but it retains an amazing resemblance with its sealskin predecessors.

In early 2019, the Haven began shipping after being funded through Indiegogo. Oru’s four-folding kayak lineup includes the Haven. This tandem is a wide open-cockpit recreational design that looks similar to Oru Beach LT.

It is much easier than other folding kayaks to set up. My kids and I loaded the Haven in our van, then we took it on vacation to a campsite. Without watching the setup videos or previewing them, and fighting a strong onshore wind, I put it together in less than an hour. It also included a return trip to the campsite for snacks. You can definitely achieve the advertised 10-minute setup with some practice.

How well does The Haven hold up to rough handling

Oru responds to durability concerns with videos of their kayaks being dragged across rocks and paddled in surf. You can also use epoxy and duct tape to repair your kayaks in the field. It has a 10-year UV protection and can be folded theoretically for more than 50 years. The hull is 100-percent recyclable. You can even throw it into the blue bin for plastic lumber, or outdoor rug.

The Oru folded into its suitcase-sized floorboards can be easily transported with a shoulder belt and stored in the car trunk. Ours had deep cracks at the seams, an observation shared online by several reviews. They also observed bending and sliding of the metal Ghooks connecting the seatbacks with the hull.

While our Ghooks held their shape well, we needed to secure a second knot to keep them from slipping. The good thing about this is that you can replace these parts easily. Oru sells replacement parts online and backs its 1-year warranty.

On the water, the Haven performs as you’d expect for an open-cockpit rec kayak with a 31-inch beam. Stability is rock solid, its lightweight hull responds quickly to every paddle stroke, and it tracked straight and stayed dry even in a stiff breeze with small whitecaps.

The Folding Kayak: Is it a refuge?

The Haven may be right for you. It was either extremely popular or a disappointment for most of those who tried it. Random beach guy giving me thumbs up. “What’s that thing ?”), absolutely not,” my wife. This kind of gut response will make it easy to decide. Oru Haven is a great option for those who want a kayak that’s lightweight and folds in half to make it portable.

There are many potential buyers that should take the Haven seriously. This includes anyone looking for a tandem open-cockpit recreational kayak. For not much more money than one of those 70-plus pounders for which you practically need a boat trailer, the Haven is half the weight, giving it the potential to be much more user-friendly, with the bonus of unprecedented packability and storage.
