Bones Coffee Review #1 – Electric Unicorn

Varden Frias Aug 26, 2020 *3 min read Man, do I love my coffee. Although coffee was initially a bitter taste in my youth, I have come to love it. One of the brands I’ve favored lately is Bones Coffee . From the funky skeleton artwork on their packaging to the bizarre flavors, this brand exudes joy. My goal is to try all of their flavors, including the limited edition seasonals, and write tactfully honest reviews. Today, I’ll discuss Electric Unicorn.

Electric Unicorn: This is the website of Bones Coffee.

It was the 1983 Summer. Bones was on a trek through Coffeeland’s treacherous, rad mountains to search for the highest quality coffee. One creature was seen in the distance. The Electric Unicorn was a magnificent beast, harnessing the power of electricity, friggin’ laser-beam eyes, and the ability to conjure fruity cereal from the heavens. Bones approached Bones and asked him where he would find the treasure he had been searching for. The Unicorn replied with, “Hop on, dude”. They raced up the mountain and Bones was able to bring them home. Coffee plants could be seen from every direction, with beans that were unmatched in the world. The Unicorns had an aura that seemed to be able to change through every color. The Unicorn provided a cup for Bones. It completely blew his mind. Smooth, balanced, and a delicious fruity cereal finish; this was the coffee Bones had been searching for. Bones, the Electric Unicorn were best friends for ever.

From the beginning, bold claims were made about this coffee. In the past, coffee I consumed was mainly from Starbucks. The majority of my coffee consumption was with iced Caramel Macchiatos and no froofroo drinks. I was therefore skeptical about fruity cereal flavored coffees. The website offers the possibility to purchase five 4 ounce bags. So I shrugged and bought some.

When the coffee came in the mail, I remained cautiously optimistic about the fruity cereal flavor. The packaging brought back childhood memories of Rainbow Brite and Care Bears intermingled with the epicness of He-Man and She-Ra. It was 80’s most flamboyant gay packaging and I love it. At the very least, I appreciated the bold creativity that went into the packaging.

The Holy Mother of Rainbow Cereal was the first thing I smelled when I opened it. It smelled like refined adult Fruity Pebbles. I was intrigued by the smell and brewed one serving. The taste! I wasn’t expecting it to be my favorite Bones Coffee flavor (to date). The taste is similar to Fruity Pebbles, but without the cereal aftertaste. It tastes like Fruity Pebbles, which I love. I tried different combinations. I made a cold brew, which was even more delicious. Switched it up by alternating milk, half n half, almond milk, or powder creamer. It was all amazing in different ways. Although I added sugar, it doesn’t need any. The coffee works fine as it is.

Bones Coffee Co. is expanding what I have come to expect in packaged coffee. It was the first time I had to grind coffee beans by myself, although this has been my only experience with coffee in the past year. Prior to this, I found it quite disgusting. After 7/11 started selling coffee slurpees, it was then that I discovered coffee. It is still one of my favourite coffee drinks. I don’t want to make a fuss..but only to point out facts that can be verified from reliable sources throughout the world.

Coffee beans are not something I bought with the intent of making my own. It seems tedious and cumbersome. Recenty, though, I thought “what the rush?” There’s no way I could do more than what’s necessary to grind the beans and make the coffee. What? I’ve only started drinking coffee one year ago, and I have no time to grind my own beans. It’s so embarrassing. This was an embarrassing thought. It was humbling. I took it all in and went to grind the beans.

I came across Bones Coffee a few months ago when I was shopping online for rare beans. You can bet I take time from my busy schedule to find rare drinks online. It should be apparent now. You have an enormous selection to choose from. It was a little stressful at first. They offer variety packs and the option to make your own. Because I was not ready to use that power, I decided to go with what had been assembled. Review spoiler: I WILL be putting together my own variety pack in the future and buying it. This has sparked my curiosity.

There are a lot of great coffee products on their website. Flavors I never dreamed could exist, a store full of apparel, coffee brewing equipment and accessories (including a Chemex that I’m eyeing). Review: Bones Electric Unicorn Fruity Cereal Coffee

Even though I like cereal, it isn’t the most heartwarming. If the weather is bad, like this one, and you feel the chill in the air, with the rooftops blaring in staccato beats, then a hot cup of cold milkiness is not the best thing. It’s okay, except for the corpse smell.

I’ve long been a religious coffee drinker for such reasons of inner immolation, and while I’ve reviewed my fair share of cereal-flavored coffee creamers, never once could I even conceive that there’d be straight-up cereal-steeped coffee beans. Tasha from Empty Bowl was the one to tell me all about Bones Coffee, a small-batch company that is well-known for unusual flavors such as PB&J or Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Also their Electric Unicorn coffee blend. Electric Unicorn, although not new in flavor, was recently reformulated. According to some reports it tastes similar to fruity cereal. This is an ambiguous piece of nomenclature, which could be referred to as anything from Froot Loops or Raisin Bran (technically), so I decided to test these beans to see if they live up to their hype.

Yep, that’s coffee. This stuff is hard to present in an attractive way.

I am the coffee snob who enjoys coffee brewed by the Big Gulpfull. But, my preference is black coffee, bitter and strong enough to make me twitch like the last of a Bop. Yet unfortunately, Electric Unicorn is not a coffee flavor I can recommend drinking black. The glory of black coffee is its simple, pure, and unadulterated bursts of smoked earth. However, when you add all sorts of strangeness to black coffee it only shows how bizarre and often medicinal these additional flavors can be.

Electric Unicorn gives you a dark experience. Since it’s trying to taste like cereal milk, the low viscosity just makes me think I’m drinking the over-watered dirt beneath a berry bush. This fruitiness can be difficult to extract without adding any additional sweetness. It was therefore necessary to quickly add some light vanilla’d creamer.

Much better. Electric Unicorn coffee can taste a lot more like fruity cereal milk. Yes, coffee still has its bitter oaky side as the cornerstone of flavor, but there is also a noticeable fruit note in this roast: cherries and citrus. The taste can vary depending on your preference, though it may be more orange-y. This sort of fruity profile doesn’t remind me specifically of any one cereal, but instead it evokes a pleasing yin-yang between the popping sweetness of Fruity Pebbles and Trix’s lemon-driven cornucopia.

Electric Unicorn, in the end, is black-andwhite. If sipped black this stuff shows you how much forced palate intrigue cannot improve something straightforward and earthen. However, if you don’t mind dipping your toes into sugared beans waters, fruity cereal espresso can make a wonderful, full-bodied accompaniment to any of the many fruited cereals, artificial or not. I will say, though, that I’m thankful the bag I have is so small. This flavor is not the sort of novelty coffee I would enjoy drinking more than once or twice. It also settles on my tongue as if it were a foreign movie without subtitles. There is no way to normalize the strange sensation of drinking hot cereal milk.
