Kamikoto Knives Reviews

In the Japanese knife category, there is stiff competition. Are Kamikoto knives the real deal, or are they well-advertised but unremarkable?

This is what I am here to discuss in today’s Kamikoto knife reviews. In my 10 years of experience in the kitchen, I have accumulated a lot of knowledge and expertise about cutlery.

We’ll be taking a closer look at all you need to know regarding Kamikoto knives. You should now be able to make an informed decision about whether Kamikoto knifes are worth your time.

Kamikoto knives represent a high quality example of Japanese traditional knife design. Their single bevel blades take some finesse, but deliver exceptional cutting power. The new blade style may prove difficult for some people, especially beginners. Intermediate and advanced chefs will appreciate how sharp these knives are. The price is comparable to Japanese knife brands and they are a good choice for any kitchen.

Kamikoto Japanese Knives – Buyer’s Guide

Kamikto crafts traditional Japanese knives using long-standing processes. A few Japanese knife producers incorporate modern techniques. But Kamikoto sticks entirely to a classic style.

It is particularly evident in single-bevel blades. Also known as “chisel” style blades, this sharpening method yields a single incredibly sharp edge. Kamikoto knives are unique in that they require a different cutting technique than regular knives. This way of slicing is very easy for chefs to get comfortable with.

Kamikoto, although headquartered in Japan, makes high-quality knives in Yanjiang in China. While this fact has drawn the ire of some online reviewers, my take is that their concerns are overblown. Yanjiang’s knife making history is as long-standing and extensive as Japan’s Seki. Kamikoto’s knives use Japanese Niigata stainless steel. They are as sharp and discerning as any Japanese knife.

Kamikoto’s confusing pricing model is my main complaint. It is clear that Kamikoto’s direct-to–consumer business model allows for lower pricing. On their website however, they still display the “original price” as an inexplicable number, often reaching into the thousands.

My tip? Ignore this sales-y gimmick and focus on the quality of the knives relative to their actual listed price. Kamikoto is a great choice for any Japanese knife lover.

Kamikoto Knives: Are they worth the price?

The answer totally depends on your wants, needs, and budget. Kamikoto knives can be displayed in a variety of ways, including as a display piece. These knives may not perform as well as other high-end knives but come with excellent display stands. Also, when dinner guests google the brand, they’ll find a pricelist with an extra zero.

If you’re primarily worried about impressing the people in your kitchen, Kamikoto knives may very well be worth a lot of money.

However, the truth is that they aren’t sold at their full MSRP. There has always been a history of Kamikoto knives that have experienced deep discounts. This knife is also frequently used by businesses that wish to provide valuable prizes or gifts. These knives are expensive, in other words.

The knives will become significantly more appealing once you see a 50% discount on the MSRP. Kamikoto isn’t my favorite knife brand, but they’re still pretty nice high-end knives, and they do come with a bit of a “wow” factor. Although they aren’t the most efficient in terms of cutting, slicing or chopping, I wouldn’t be surprised if you find a half-off deal.

Note that the prices of internet sales fluctuate a lot. While these knives have been on sale occasionally in the past, there’s no reason to believe that they’ll be on sale in the near (or distant) future. It’s best to get a Yoshihiro if you don’t have time to wait. However, if you do need to buy a Kamikoto set at a lower price, it’s worth waiting.

Japanese Knives, Chinese Made Knives?

Before diving into each knife review, let’s discuss the country of origin for a second. These knives are made of Japanese steel and were produced in China. Although they’re made from Japanese steel, these knives have been handcrafted by master knife makers. Kamikoto knives, some say, use Niigata fake steel.

The ability to make knives is not worse in China than it is in Japan. Although these knives are more difficult than knives made in Japan by a Japanese brand, it doesn’t matter what their origin is. These knives are based on the designs and materials used and quality assurance by the manufacturer.

Some people also complain that Kamikoto knives aren’t real “traditional” Japanese knives . These complaints are fine. Kamikoto knives tend to be heavier and more thicker than you might expect. However, these knives still function well as knives. Japanese knife factories don’t produce thin, single-beveled swords.

Even Yoshihiro makes a number of knives in thicker styles with symmetrical edges, and they’re about as Japanese as you get. Even though the design is clearly Western-influenced, I find it acceptable to buy a Kamikoto.

Kamikoto Knives Should You Purchase?

Kamikoto knives tend to be very expensive. While they may be on sale, these knives are still quite expensive than Yoshihiro and other premium brands. However, these knives are excellent and can be maintained well.

They’re also beautiful and have a bit of additional prestige that comes from the high cost of each knife.

You can buy a kitchen set if you have the money. But if your budget is tight, it’s best to either wait for a bargain or go with another brand. Kamikoto knives don’t cost as much as the MSRP, which is why most people aren’t buying them. They’ve had very strong sales in the past. If you happen to catch them while they’re on one of those deep sales in the future, they’re a lot more cost-effective when compared to other brands.

While Kamikoto’s knives are manufactured in China, this shouldn’t factor into your decision. Kamikoto makes knives similar in design to those made by Japanese knife makers. Kamikoto also employs Chinese artisans with the same skill level as Japanese. The knives Kamikoto makes aren’t for everyone, but they do fantastic work in the kitchen.

This knife’s shape, with its thicker spine, and slight curve makes it an American favorite. Every chef has been trained to rock our knife blades. Keep in mind, this is a Japanese traditional knife. It is therefore single-bevel. (The blade is sharpened on only one side). Left-handed chefs won’t find this knife useful.
