I interviewed 13 industry experts, safety authorities, and physicians while researching this guide, collecting their insights on what makes a quality booster seat and best practices in using one.
Among them were certified Child Passenger Safety Technician Lani Harrison, a seasoned tech in Los Angeles who installs more than 300 car seats each year; Aditya Belwadi, Ph. D, is a biomechanics scientist leading the Child Passenger Safety Research Team at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Julie Mansfield is an engineer research at the Injury Biomechanics Research Center of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Bill Horn heads sled testing at Calspan of Buffalo in New York. This facility, which offers one of top crash-testing facilities in America, is also on hand.
I’m also a Certified CPST and I completed a 40-hour training course through Safe Kids Worldwide. I interviewed representatives of the car seat manufacturer Chicco, Diono Nuna, Graco, Bubble. Bum and Mi. Fold. The Fold. Gear. Lab Car Seats for the Littles Once we identified the seats that performed the best during real-world commutes we enlisted the engineering team at Calspan to perform side-impact crash testing so we could see how our top-rated booster seats performed.
I’ve reported on car seats for Wirecutter for over a year, writing the infant convertible car seat guides. I worked for almost a decade on Capitol Hill and at the Department of Commerce and am familiar with government rules and regulations of the type that affect car seat safety. Slate Magazine, The Washington Post Health Affairs and Marie Claire all published my policy-related reporting. Although my two children, aged 5 and 2, have not yet been placed in booster seats by wirecutter, I would be comfortable placing them in one of the Wirecutter choices below.
Here’s How We Tested
We asked five families to try our finalist booster seats and report how easy it was to use the seat, have the child buckle themselves in, and move it in and out of their car.
After consulting industry experts and conducting independent side-impact tests with Calspan Buffalo, New York,
Julie Mansfield was a research scientist with The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Injury Biomechanics and Research Center. While frontal impact is the most commonly occurring type of crash, she found that side-impact collisions result in a greater percentage of injuries. Mansfield says that due to the design of cars, side impact doesn’t offer as much protection. You can see more intrusion in the doors when there is a collision.
The US currently does not have a federal rule that requires child car seats to adhere to any standards related to side-impact protection. NHTSA, an agency that regulates car seating, has filed a notice proposing rulemaking regarding side-impact standards. However, it does not currently include booster seat requirements.
NHTSA is currently conducting front-impact tests on booster seat, but its data base does not contain all our finalists.
Another important point to be noted: Although booster seats are tested for crash safety, they do not provide protection against injury like infant and convertible car seats. A child using a booster requires protection from the seat belt. The car’s safety systems play an important role in protecting adult passengers.
Calspan thought that side-impact tests should only be conducted using a 3-year–old dummy. High-back boosters typically have weight limits of at least 30 pounds. NHTSA crashes with an identical 3-year old dummy. Calspan experts explained that even though the size of the dummy is smaller than one who might use a booster, this protocol allowed for the evaluation of the relative safety between booster seats. “The 3-year-old dummy is standard,” said engineer Bill Horn, who oversaw the crash testing. To confirm and distinguish our choices, we used crash testing results. We tested just six seats. These results cannot be used to prove that any seat in the car is safe or does not crash well.

Diono Monterey XT rated highest in booster seat crash tests. This seats is comfortable for children to buckle into and uses properly. Diono’s backrest adjuster makes it easier for your child to fit the seat as they get older. Kids loved the dual cupholders which can push in or out. Also, the bright fabric was easy to wash and very comfortable. According to the testers, Diono Monterey XT appears and feels better than any other seat we looked at.
Only one crash test, the Diono crash test run, saw the head of the dummy not contact the door. Calspan engineer Bill Horn, though we could not replicate this test to confirm that it was not an error, believes the seat’s more comfortable headrest contributed to this outcome. “That headrest really is very thick,” Horn observed. He noted that there is quite a bit of space between the door and the dummy. The Diono scored about the same on chest and head impact as Chicco, which had a score of 623 vs. 625. A very similar chest-impact score of 15.4 vs 16.8 was also recorded.
In our side-impact tests, the Diono was only seat that kept the dummy’s head away from the doors. This is due to the more enclosed and substantial headrest. Video: Calspan Calspan A Wirecutter editor also tried the Chicco, the Graco and other seats with his children. He noted that the Diono has a “shoulder buckle buckle pass-through” which is a better fit for his shoulder than any of our others. This seat was easy to adjust to her 5-year old’s height. Another test subject found it to be the most customizable. You can easily adjust the headrest to fit your kid’s height, as with all our top picks. You can also adjust the Diono’s shoulder-width wings with the knob on the back of the seat to allow more room, which is unusual among booster seats and can make it a more comfortable experience for the kid. This seat has two cupholders that fold into it, which can be a plus when they aren’t in use, as they won’t take up additional space.
It is possible to raise or lower your Diono’s Headrest by pressing down on the red Adjuster. Our only tested model has the ability to adjust its backrest width.
