As of 2022, Walmart will not offer cashback on any remaining Walmart gift card balances. However, certain states such as California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington allow customers to receive the remaining balance (up to $10) in cash.

Although there’s no way to receive cashback on a Walmart gift card, this hack works really well.

Step 1. You’ll need to buy an item slightly less expensive than your Walmart Gift Card, and then pay with cash or a card the difference.

The $55 product could be purchased with a $50 Walmart gift card and $5 cash.

Once the payment has been made, ensure you keep the receipt as this will now count as a “cash purchase” in Walmarts’ eyes.

Step 2 – Keep your product in their original box. Return it within 14 days.

Step 3 – You’ll receive a refund that you can put on a debit card and cash.

Your state may require retailers to give cash refunds on gift cards. If so, bring your Walmart gift voucher to customer service and ask to be exchanged for cash.

You may have to ask for a store manager if the employee is unaware of your state’s specific rules on gift card returns.

Pay attention to the fact that not all states allow cash refunds from gift cards. California is one example. It requires that the gift-card balance be less than $10 before it can be reimbursed.

Before you request cashback from your gift cards, make sure that your state has its own rules.
