can the dentist tell if you smoke

What can a dentist tell you if your smokes?

Most smokers will try to mask the smell of their cigarettes by chewing gum, mints, and mouthwash. But the truth is, your dentist in Hagerstown can probably still tell that you’re a smoker even if you don’t share that information. Your dentist will be able to tell a lot about your oral health and how you are doing.

Your bi-annual dental visits are a great opportunity for both you and your dentist to catch up, share and discuss any changes that may have happened in your oral or overall health, and for your dental team to thoroughly clean and exam your teeth. It’s vital to talk with your dentist about your past and present health habits. It’s true! Your dental care will be improved if you talk to your dentist, even if it’s embarrassing. There are some things that your dentist will tell you about yourself, even though you may not want them to.

Three Things Every Dentist Should Know

You Bite Your Nails dentist

in Hagerstown doesn’t need to be a trained manicurist to know that you bite your nails. How? What is the answer? This is not the only problem. A nail biter’s front teeth can appear worn down, shortened, or flat. Nail-biting can have other side effects that could lead to serious health problems. The risk of tooth decay increases when bacteria can nest in cracks or chips. Over time, these tiny defects can become larger and lead to sensitive teeth and even broken teeth. The change in the shape of your teeth can also cause problems with your bite, resulting in jaw pain and TMD/TMJ disorders.

It is OK To Floss Prior to Your Appointments

We are impressed by your flossing effort and appreciate your quickness. However, it will be difficult to tell if this was the first or second time you have flossed in the past six months. Although you might have removed all traces of food between your teeth, the truth is that your gums still can tell. If you don’t floss frequently, your gums often turn reddish-brown and puffy. This can lead to bleeding during hygiene appointments. The common myth that everybody’s gums are prone to bleeding at the dentist is false. Regular flossing will ensure that healthy gums don’t bleed.

It’s OK to Not Brush Your Teeth

Your Hagerstown dentist will notice signs such as patients who don’t brush twice daily or aren’t thorough enough. Both the state of your gums and what remains on your teeth are indicators. Bi-annually, avid brushers have healthier, pinker gums, and less tartar buildup. Casual brushers tend to have more tartar, and swollen gums.

We always encourage you to share any habits or concerns with your dentist in Hagerstown . Talk to your dentist, even if you don’t want to. Just like your physician and dentist, they are an integral part of your healthcare team. They can provide better care for you teeth and overall health.

Can My Dentist Tell That I Smoke Weed? No!

Your dentist can’t tell you if you smoke before going to the dentist.

However, your dentist may be able to tell that you’re smoking some kind of substance regularly. It is not difficult to see the similarities between smoking pot and cigarettes. A few oral health concerns can result from regular smoking of cannabis:

The use or medical marijuana could cause dryness in the mouth. Like tobacco, marijuana products can reduce saliva flow. That could lead to increased risk for gum disease, tooth decay, and even worsening of the condition.

Tooth discoloration is a result of weed smoking. They are usually milder than those from tobacco. You may notice stains in your teeth if you’re a regular weed smoker.

Higher risk for oral cancer. It’s illegal federally so there hasn’t been much research. A few studies, however, have found that marijuana smoking can increase oral cancer risk, but to a lesser degree than tobacco.

Parkside Family Dental is happy to help you if your doctor has advised that you stop smoking marijuana. By doing this, you can get a better treatment plan that suits your needs and will protect your mouth.

It is well-known that smoking pot can leave your mouth feeling irritated. Your dentist will also be able tell you if your dry mouth is associated with tooth decay.

Do Dentists Know if I Smoke?

The quick answer to this question is “Yes.” Dentists can almost always tell if a person is a smoker or not, especially if the dentist has been practicing for a long time. Smoking is a sign that someone has a problem with their gums and teeth.

People who smoke tend to have their gums recede more than others.

Second, the inner surface of your teeth is more stained by smoke than its outer surfaces. A dentist can see the dark stains inside your teeth from your smoker mouth.

The dentist will notice other indicators that you’ve smoked in the day before your appointment. This includes the consistency of what your saliva looks like and how it smells.

Some of the names of the wonderful team members I remember I would like to mention like : Dr. Bains, Alex, Anna and Rupa. A big thank you for all the years for the amazing service🙏 Keep up the great work. You all are amazing! – RIGHT PATH LEARNING
I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
