Marquis de Sade: Who would not want their teeth cleaned? Well, when he’s Chris Evans the answer is probably everyone.
Evans may be considering trading his chunky cable knit in for a leather jacket or some scrubs. EW learned from Evans that he is currently in talks to be the role of Orin Scrivello (“The Dentist”), in an adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors. The movie will be directed and produced by Greg Berlanti.
The role was played by Steve Martin in the movie from 1986, an adaptation of the Off Broadway musical. It is based on the 1960 Roger Corman film.
Little Shop is a musical by the beloved Disney Disney duo Howard Ashman, Alan Menken. The story follows Seymour who works as a plant sales clerk and becomes a carnivorous plant owner that seeks out blood and flesh. Seymour is thrown into an unimaginable spiral of death when Audrey II, a plant that craves blood and human flesh, gives him hope. Audrey will also help Seymour escape Orin Scrivello’s abusive ways.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to announce that Evans had been circling the project. It reported that Taron Egerton and Scarlett Johansson are in talks for roles as Audrey and Seymour. THR reports that Audrey II’s voice actor is Billy Porter.
Evans later added further support to Evans’ report, tweeting about THR’s story and including the caption of “tooth emoji” along with an exclamation-point.
Fans of Evans will note that he’s discussed appearing in a musical for some time. The March 2019 Hollywood Reporter interview with Evans discussed his experience growing up performing musical theatre. It even included an explicit mention of interest for the Dentist part in Little Shop. I want to be a musical actor. One person told me that they were [remaking] Little Shop of Horrors. I thought, “Oh, my God, I can’t be down!” Please? Can I be the dentist? He laughed.
Ironically Evans’ father was a dentist.

Plot
The film opens with a trio of “Greek chorus” girls, Crystal, Ronette,and Chiffon introducing the story and warning that horrors are coming. (“Prologue – Little Shop of Horrors”) Seymour Krelborn is a colleague of Audrey’s at Mushnik’s Flower Shop. It is located in New York City’s Skid Row, which has been described as a rough, run-down area. They are sad that they have to stay in the same neighborhood. (“Skid Row) (Downtown )”). A lack of customers forces Mr. Mushnik to shut down the shop. Audrey however suggests that Seymour might be able to display an unusual plant he owns. Immediately attracting a customer, Seymour explains he bought the plant which he dubbed “Audrey II” from a Chinese flower shop during a solar eclipse (“Da-Doo”). The plant starts to wither, drawing business to Mushnik’s store. Seymour accidentally pricks his finger, and discovers that Audrey II needs human blood to thrive (“Grow for Me”).
Seymour grows quickly and Audrey II becomes an international celebrity. Audrey’s boyfriend Orin Scrivello is cruel to her and she suffers. Audrey feels sorry for him, however, and secretly dreamt of moving with Seymour to the suburbs. Seymour still feeds Audrey II himself, draining his energy (“Some Fun Now”. Seymour attempts to propose to Audrey, but Audrey refuses to go. Orin is revealed to have been a dentist. Seymour ends his business and Audrey II begins to contact Seymour. Audrey II is demanding more blood from Seymour. Seymour could be asked to kill someone by Orin in return for fame, fortune and the ability of Audrey to love him. Seymour first refuses but later agrees.
Seymour, after Orin has finished with Arthur Denton, his patient and masochist, Seymour draws on Orin a revolver but can’t bring himself to use the weapon. Orin, an abuser of nitrous dioxide, wears a Venturi Mask to keep the gas flowing. Seymour watches him as he dies. Seymour breaks down Orin and then feeds Audrey II. Audrey II grows to an enormous size. Mushnik flees unassisted.
Audrey, who is feeling guilt over Orin’s disappearance, finds comfort in Seymour, where the two confess their feelings for one another (“Suddenly, Seymour”) That night, Mushnik confronts Seymour about Orin’s death and holds Seymour at gunpoint, blackmailing him into turning the plant over and leaving town. Seymour is forced to give Audrey II care instructions, but the plant swallows Mushnik before Seymour can tell the truth.
Seymour, despite the success of Audrey II, is concerned about Audrey II’s growth and insatiable appetite. (“The Meek Shall Inherit”) Seymour is offered money and a contract to host a botany television show. Seymour feels overwhelmed, so he decides to flee Skid Row with Audrey, using the money the following day and starving the plant. Audrey II is astonished that Seymour proposed marriage to Audrey II. Seymour offers money and a contract for a botany TV show. Audrey II demands another meal. Seymour says yes, but insists Seymour use meat from a local butcher. Seymour has gone. Audrey II is telephoned by the plant and asked to go into the shop. After that, she tries “Suppertime II”.
Seymour is able to escape the store by rescuing Audrey just in time. Seymour explains that he gave the plant its success to win Audrey’s affections and Seymour finds out she loves him. (Reply) Approached by an executive named Patrick Martin from a botanical company, Seymour is offered a contract to breed Audrey II and sell the saplings worldwide. Seymour gets so upset by Martin’s idea that he drives Seymour away. Seymour realizes that Audrey II is his responsibility and must be destroyed.
Seymour discovers Audrey II (an alien from outer space) when he returns to the shop. Audrey II hooks Seymour into destroying the shop. Seymour then grabs an exposed cable and charges it. The explosion ensues. Seymour leaves the shop destroyed and reunites safely with Audrey. The couple wed and moved to suburbia. As they arrive at their new home, a smiling Audrey II bud can be seen among the flowers in their front yard, leaving the ending ambiguous.

Christian Borle Was Happy To Play A Villain Again In Little Shop Of Horrors
Borle is a fan of sinning onstage, whether it’s Orin Scrivello or Willy Wonka.
Christian Borle was always certain that he would portray Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors. As a self-described “young, nerdy character actor” wearing out the show’s album on cassette tape, Borle imagined himself as the love-struck flower-shop employee at the center of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s 1982 horror musical about a flesh-eating plant.
Borle, however, is not limited to one role. Borle now has eight (if voiceovers are included) roles in Little Shop. It stars Jonathan Groff as Seymour, Tammy Blanchard plays Audrey, and will be playing at Westside Theatre through January 19, 2020.
Borle describes the show as “just like being shot out of canon.” It’s a continuous dance party. It just goes by in a flash of costume changes and mustaches and wigs and stage dirt. It’s such a labor of love, but it’s not labor at all.”

With this revival, there’s much talk of nostalgia. This musical was first performed on Broadway in 1982. It almost feels like an homage. Do you recall any other productions as you were working on the show?
I think we all agreed that we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, and because it’s so well-written and constructed, it was easy to do. It was through their pioneering work in musical theatre that we gained a greater appreciation of the works Howard Ashman, Alan Menken and others did back at the beginning of the 1980s. They brought musical theater structure to the masses during the Disney Renaissance, when they did Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. This kind of reminds me of its germ.
Orin Scrivello, the maddening dentist, is the principal character. Are there any other parts that you were inspired by?

I have been going to this place for the last 5 years. I have had many problems. They took care of them. The customer service, care, guidance and treatment I have got have been always extraordinary. I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
