How to Study for and Pass the Dental Admissions Test (Dat).
When considering how long it takes to be a dentist, do not forget about the time it takes to apply for schools. The Dental Admissions Test must be passed in order to apply for dental school. You can think of it as the SAT/ACT for dental school. The four-part multiple-choice test consists of the following: Survey of Natural Sciences; Perceptual Ability; Reading Comprehension; and Quantitative Thinking. It takes 4 hours and 15 mins to complete the test. The tests are administered by approved testing centers. Most students take the DAT after their third year of college.
A high score on the DAT will help you get into dental school. Online study guides will help you prepare. American Dental Association provides a wide range of preparation resources, which include a complete practice exam. Students can study for the exam in a variety of ways. Some plans call for students to study 40 hours per semaine over eight weeks. Some plans recommend studying 3 to 6 hours per day over a period of five months.
The test is scored on a scale of 1 to 30 with the average score being 17. Although you are allowed to take the exam three more times, there is a 90-day waiting period between every attempt. This table shows the average DAT score of students from each school. It will give you an indication of your ability to pass.
How long does it take to become a Dentist?
Let’s examine the question. What time will it take until you become a dental assistant? Of course, it depends on if you’re going to school full-time, if you’re double majoring or taking extra classes, and if you pass all of your classes the first time. Let’s assume you’re a full-time college student , and you’re doing well in school.
General undergraduate school. Most dental schools require that you have an undergraduate degree before even starting. It means that you must attend four-year colleges to obtain a degree. This portion can be completed in as little as four years, if you work hard and are patient.
Dental school. Step two is to apply for, get accepted and then go to dental school. This is another four-year academic program with the entire focus being on dentistry.
When you’re finished, you will earn either a DDS or a DMD, which means you’re either called a Doctor of Dental Surgery or a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry . The funny thing is, they actually mean the same thing, and you’ve had the same education You’d think that one meant you had a specialty in surgery, but that’s not the case. You only have one difference: which dental school you go to. Some dental schools will award you a DDS; others, a DMD.
Specialties. You’re probably already in it eight years after graduating high school. If so, your grades are good and you can get through school quickly. Now, you have a decision to make – are you going to specialize? Here are some potential specialties for dental work according to American Dental Academy.
Dental Anesthesiology Dental Public Health Endodontics Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Oral Medicine Orofacial Pain Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Pediatric Dentistry Periodontics Prosthodontics Each of these specialties could take you another two years of specialized training and school to earn your certificate in that field.
National Board Dental Examination. You must complete this national exam in order to take your clinical examination.
These exams are possible to take during dental school. If taken concurrently with school, this won’t add any extra time to the process of becoming a dentist Clinical Examination. This examination is also known as a clinical, or live patient dental exam. You can either take the exam in your final year of dental school or immediately afterwards.
There are two important things to note about this exam. First, it is not required by all states. You might not even have to take the exam. Importantly, if your attempt fails, it can be retaken and not count against yourself.
It takes approximately eight years for a person to become a general practitioner dentist. Specialization will take you two additional years.

Which training do dentists need?
Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine programs are the most common ways that dentists get their education in graduate school. DDS and DMD programs have no distinguishing differences; both provide the same level of preparation. Applicants to dental school should have high grades in prerequisite courses like biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, and biochemistry. Dental schools look for candidates with excellent scores on the Dental Admissions Test.
DDS and DMD program students study topics in dental anatomy and pathology. Learn about all aspects of dental practice including periodontics as well orthodontics, endodontics (geriatric, pediatric, and prosthodontics), and oral surgery. The dental program teaches students how to run a dental practice, and interact with patients of different ages.
Through their dental program, students take clinical clerkships as well rotations. These allow them to see dentists in action and interact with patients.
Does the state have any licensure or certification requirements?
To practice dentistry in their respective states, dentists need to be licensed. Many states require that dentists graduate from a DDS/DMD program, which is accredited by American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. Then they have to pass clinical as well as written exams. The National Board Dental Examinations Parts I and Two are required. But, states have different requirements.

It takes a lot of school to become an orthodontist. It usually takes approximately 12 years of formal university education to become a certified specialist in orthodontics!
A four-year Bachelor’s Degree, typically a Bachelor in Science, will start your university career. After completing your bachelor’s degree, you will apply to and get into dental school. It takes an additional four years. There are 10 dental schools in Canada, and 66 dental schools in the United States. You can see them all here. After eight years at university you’ll be a general dentistry! Some dentists choose to pursue a dental specialty such as orthodontics, which requires an additional three-year Master of Science degree and residency program. Other specialties include pediatric dentistry, oral surgery, periodontics, and endodontics. A lot of schools will require additional work experience or training before you can enter a special residency such as one in a hospital.
Canada has seven dental schools that offer an orthodontics graduate program. Each school accepts a maximum of three to five residents per year, which is less than thirty positions in the entire country.
Once you graduate from your dental specialty residency program, you will write the National Dental Specialty Board certification examination, governed by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Upon passing this examination, you are then officially a certified specialist in orthodontics in Canada!

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy.
