What’S The Difference Between Dds & Dmd?

Blog General Blog Posts We dentists sometimes use a more clinical language to communicate with our patients. Although our goal is not to appear mysterious, we sometimes have to make things confusing for patients. A common query that patients are looking for is the meaning of each letter after their name: DMD, DDS. But what is the difference? Is one better than the other?

DMD (which stands as Doctor of Medicine, Dentistry) is exactly the same degree. The same training was received by dentists, no matter whether they are DMDs or DDSs. Only difference is that DMDs are not the preferred name for dental degrees at some universities. DMDs can be chosen by some schools.

This means that Dr. John Smith, who received his DMD and Dr. Jane Doe from UCLA, received clinical training at the same rate.

Sometimes, you will see additional letters following the names of dentists such as FICOI and MAGD. They are not university degrees. Instead, they indicate additional training that the dentist received after dental school. Talk to your dentist if these letters are important! He or she spent lots of time & energy earning the designation & will be happy to share how their extra expertise helps him or her keep your smile healthy.

Information bonus: Sometimes, you will see BDS following the names of overseas dentists.

BDS degree holders in Europe or India can become fully qualified and trained dentists within their respective countries. Due to the differences in certification requirements foreign dentists who have BDS degrees must also obtain their DDS/DMD degrees to be able to practice dentistry in America or Canada.

The Difference Between Dds & Dmd

To make sure you choose the right health care provider for your specific needs, you have the right of knowing what their training has been. There are many specialties within dental medicine. These include periodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and orthodontics. But what is the difference? You can simply say that the difference between them is one letter.

DMD (Doctorate of Dental Medicine), as well as DDS (Doctorate of Dental Surgery) signify that one is a doctor of dentist medicine. Although there are subtle differences in curricula within and between the two degrees, the American Dental Association considers them identical. General dentistry can only be practiced by anyone who has a DDS or DMD.

Perhaps your next question is: Why the differences if they look identical? Harvard is another short answer. DDS was the only type of dental degree that existed before 1867. Harvard tradition says that degrees should have Latin names. So the Dentariae Medicinae Doctor (Doctor of Dental Medicine or DMD) was born when they opened their first dental school in 2006. There is not much difference in the DDS or DMD degrees. The only thing that makes them different is that the DMD was earned by Harvard.

Dds vs Dmd: What’s the difference?

DDS or DMD is the title that graduate dentists can hold. Did you know the difference? Is one degree held in a higher regard than the other? Is it possible to define them?

The title is all that really makes the difference. DMD, DDS, and DMD all have the same title. They just have different names. This makes them equivalent. Each dentist can practice dentistry with the DDS or DMD, provided they have completed the same training.

First, let’s clarify what each stands for. DDS means Doctor of Dentistry and DMD, Doctor of Medicine In Dentistry. While you may initially believe that the former deals with surgery while the latter deals with medicine, you would be incorrect – they are the same degree!

Is there a difference between the two? Harvard University. According to Prospective Doctor , When Harvard added a dental school, they decided against the then-standard DDS degree for graduate dentists. This was due to a tradition with Harvard – they offer their degrees via translation from Latin. Chirurgae Dentium Doctoris, for example, is Latinized translation of DDS. The degree would be known as CDD. Harvard decided that Dentariae Medicinae Doctoris was better, and created a DMD.

Nowadays, while both degrees are still used, DDS seems to be the slightly more recurring title.

Everyone is professional and dedicated to deliver the best. I am sorry, I don’t remember all the names of the wonderful staff. Some of the names of the wonderful team members I remember I would like to mention like : Dr. Bains, Alex, Anna and Rupa. A big thank you for all the years for the amazing service🙏 Keep up the great work. You all are amazing! – RIGHT PATH LEARNING
I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy. Mihaela is the BEST hygienist and Dr Galo is kind and extremely gentle. Even a root canal isn’t half bad with Dr Galo! Dr Soraya is also wonderful! Thanks Angel Care. ☺️ – Tara H
