The height of your ceiling and your area will affect the size of your fixture. Keep in mind that there are no strict rules when it comes to fixture placement personal preference and design aesthetic is sometimes enough to go on. It is common to place one recessed lamp for every four to six feet of ceiling height. Fixtures should normally be located 24 inches from any wall, cabinet or shelf with 2 to 5 foot space between them. For example, a bedroom will not require as much light as a kitchen so it is possible to use fewer fixtures.

The common size for residential recessed downlights is 4 to 7 inches in diameter. A 6-inch fixture is the most common size. Many 6-inch fixtures are also available. Ideal for kitchens is a 4 or 5-inch size to provide light above countertops that provides sufficient power for cleanup and food prep. Recessed lights have a bulb contained inside an inverted cylindrical canister that’s mounted virtually flush with the ceiling. These lights are not visible and do not take up space.

What type of lightbulb do you prefer?
A recessed fixture with a medium screw base lamp holder can take an incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, or LED light bulb. You can also find fixtures with lamp holders or sockets that are only compatible with certain light bulbs (usually fluorescent or halogen).
There are fluorescent lamps available with a low Kelvin rating. These lamps offer the same savings and long-life as incandescent lights but also provide color warmth. A halogen works well for providing high intensity light to small areas. Incandescent lamps offer warm lighting that is general and comfortable. For dimming recessed lights or controlling them remotely or with an automated system, you should choose fixtures that can be used incandescent, LED, and halogen bulbs. If they do not have a dimmable bulb, fluorescent light bulbs won’t dimmable.
1. Size
These modern residential LEDrecessed lights are available in sizes between 2 and 6 inches. You’ll find the most variety in 4-inch or 6-inch lights.
It’s not difficult to see that the recessed light sizes are different. For example, 6-inch lights will be brighter than 4 inch lights. Incandescents recessed lights had this same effect, but LEDs have different results. Many LED recessed lights that are 4-inches in size can beam out the same amount of light as 6-inch ones, but they have a lower brightness and spread. Deciding on the right size of LED recessed lighting for a space is more an aesthetic than it is a practical decision. The following is my recommendation.
Begin with consistency. If you already have lighting fixtures in your home, it is a good idea to match them. However, it’s perfectly okay to use different lighting sizes throughout your house.
Visual preference – Take into account the space’s scale. For large rooms, or rooms with tall ceilings, I recommend using 6-inch lights for general lighting and 4-inch lights for task and accent lighting. A 4-inch light is more flattering for sloped ceilings that a 6-inch one.
A final note on recessed light sizes. When a label says it’s a “4-inch” or “6-inch” recessed light, that is the measurement across the inside of the housing (diameter) with the trim removed.

4 Inch and 6 Inch Recessed Lighting: Which Is Better?
Although neither is the best, either size could be used for specific applications.
Each day I am a lighting contractor and help homeowners select between 4-inch and 6-inch recessed lights. This can make it difficult to decide on the right lighting for your home.
Below I will explain the differences between them and give my opinions. I’ve also included decision trees for general, task, and accent lighting to make it simple for you to decide what’s best for your rooms.
Three Common Myths About 4-inch and 6-inch Recessed Lights. First, let me dispel some common misconceptions regarding 4-inch and 6-inch LED Recessed Lighting. They weren’t always wrong. Modern LED recessed lighting has changed all that.
Myth #1: Only 6-inch lights should be used for general lighting because 4-inch lights are not bright enough.
For general lighting fixtures, it is recommended that they produce at least 600 lumens. Incandescent lightbulbs R20 or MR16 produced far fewer lumens per 4-inch fixture than did the R20, MR16 and MR16 fixtures. But with modern LED technology, most 4-inch LED recessed lights now meet or exceed this specification .
Myth #2, 4-inch recessed lamps are too small to use for general lighting.
Fact: Spreading or distributing light depends on the angle of the lens and not its size. Here is a comparison showing a 4-inch and 6-inch recessed lights with identical beam angles. Look at where the cone starts on the wall. They are very similar, if not identical.
Myth #3: You should always use the same size throughout your home.
Fact: Though style should be uniform, you must consider type and size on a more functional level. You can mix and match recessed lighting of different sizes in the same space.
Recessed Kitchen Lighting Reconsidered
This kitchen lighting scheme is evidence-based. When the cook is standing at the kitchen counter, can lights in the aisles create shadows?
