Pompeian Olive Oil: Reviewed by Experts

Pompeian Olive Oil has a wide range of availability and is extremely affordable. What does this oil taste like? Below are the results, which were somewhat surprising.

Pompeian olive oil is the number one brand on American grocery store shelves. They are available at all major retailers, including Target and Walmart. You will be able to spot it with the help of its green and yellow plastic bottles. The logo often features images of rolling fields and olive trees. It usually sits next to large brands like Bertolli, Colavita or California Olive Ranch.

Pompeian Olive Oil isn’t fancy or crafty. However it gives consumers the option to obtain extra virgin olive Oil at a reasonable price. This can be $0.35 an ounce. While some olive oil manufacturers charge upwards $2-3 an ounce, such as Brightland Olive Oil which costs $37 per bottles).

However, price is not necessarily synonymous with quality. How much do you get for the extremely affordable price? We’ll briefly discuss the history of Pompeian and its quality standards. Then we’ll dive into how the Pompeian tastes.

Pompeian Olive Oil: An Old Company with a Century of Experience and High Standards. After researching Pompeian, I found promising signs. They’ve been around for over 100 years the company was founded in 1906 and started off producing olive oil in Italy to export to the United States, where it helped satisfy the tastes of the growing Mediterranean community. And today, the company works with a co-op of family farmers from around the world (including Morocco, Spain, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Greece, Turkey, Uruguay, Tunisia, and California) and prides itself on being 100% farmer-owned As far as quality control goes: The company conducts daily internal tests that exceed international standards in their Pompeian Quality Control and Research & Development Center , which opened in 2017. Numerous Pompeian olive oils are also certified with the North American Olive Oil Association’s (NAOOA), Certified Quality Seal. These seals independently test olive oils to ensure they adhere to the International Olive Council’s (IOC) physicochemical standards for quality and purity.

In March 2021, 9 of nine company-produced olive oils were also heart-healthy certified by the American Heart Association. See How Pompeian Olive Oil Tastes to learn more about its health benefits.

Earlier this year, the Tasting Team at OliveOil.com reviewed three varieties of Pompeian Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Walmart, all of which came in green-hued plastic bottles:

Pompeian Review

Pompeian earned only one fewer first-place votes than our winner, Goya, but tasters expressed mixed feelings in our Pompeian olive oil review. A majority of those who enjoyed it described the oil as “light” and having a pleasant olive taste. There was not the same level of spiciness in the cheaper olive oils. Even though it didn’t taste as strongly peppery as some other olive oils, there was something that lingered even after the bread had been toasted. Some of our olive oil reviews found that the aftertaste was a little bitter and too “stingy”. On the whole, though, this seemed to our tasters like a good all-around oil that would be equally at home in a saute pan and topping off cooked foods such as grilled meats.

Amazon

explains that combining these various olive oils allows Pompeian oil to deliver the consistent flavor customers expect. The company was founded in Italy but is headquartered in Baltimore since more than 100 years. It was the first company to sign up for USDA monitoring to ensure quality and purity.

Cheap Olive Oil Taste Test

The olive oil tasters were asked to review five oils. Although the tasters didn’t know what oils were being sampled, they decanted the oil into identical containers. They were labeled A-E with the same labels.

Colavita seemed to be the highest-priced brand and would likely win. To our delight, Goya won. It had a very mild bitter taste and was described as “lemony”, with hints of pepper. Pompeian, which is a very cheap olive oil brand, was runner up.

Colavita is the only oil of the five in our olive oil review that comes in a green bottle; the others come in clear bottles. This matters because light is an enemy of olive oil, as cooking blog The Kitchn explains. (Of course, this did not influence the tasters, because they didn’t see the bottles.) When you purchase cheap olive oils in large containers, pour it into another container and then put the rest back in the pantry. You should keep it out of direct heat.

The results of our olive oil tests were remarkably similar. Some testers thought the Trader Joe’s and Pompeian olive oils looked slightly greener, but otherwise all seemed to have the same golden hue.
