It took us a while to finally get it at TRMR towers. It is very easy to put the 505 CST together and it follows the same pattern as the other Proform treadmills. This system has proven reliable and easy to use. It is a difficult task to put it all together. While it can be done by one person, it wouldn’t be recommended. Assembly didn’t pose any problems and all components were properly labeled.
The aesthetics of the 505 CST are not likely to be recognized for groundbreaking modern design. Proform has opted to stick with the tried and trusted (though a little dull) black and grey colourway combination. Although it may not look like Pininfarina’s masterpiece of art, this equipment is quite substantial. Proform chose to focus on the core of the treadmill, and prioritized function over appearance. It is easy to see that the treadmill is well-built. It is likely that this machine will last a lifetime if it gets taken care of properly.
Rollers, together with the motor drive and running deck, are one of the most critical components in a treadmill. A roller is essential as the wider the wheel, the less surface that comes in direct contact with the belt. The more contact there is, the less tension is needed to prevent the belt from slipping. The bottom line is that a larger roller generally equates to quieter operation and a longer lifespan. It is powered by a 2.5hp drive motor that can reach speeds of between 0-18 kph (0-11.1 mph). The motor never sounds stressed even when it’s at its maximum speed.
When you are running, you want to feel secure and comfortable. At 51cm x 140cm (20″ x 55.1″) there’s lots of space to move around on the running deck, even if you’re tall. Proform’s ProShox cushioning works well because there’s enough space behind and around you. While the cushioning is soft enough to feel comfortable on long-distance runs, it’s firm enough that each step can be launched with confidence. This balance is excellent and should suit all runners, regardless of their goal of running marathons or high-intensity cardio. Although it isn’t the highest incline it still has true 10%. This makes it more steep than any other model with the same slope. A combination of the top speed at 18 kph and 10% incline makes it a challenging run for most.
Its console display has seen a significant visual improvement from the predecessor. It is an improvement that’s very noticeable and welcome. The 505 CST has a 5″ backlit LCD LCD screen. The LCD screen is easily read and although it can be a bit tricky to see in particularly sunny conditions (such as in a conservatory on a sunny day) it’s still easy to see and read in most indoor lighting conditions. A variety of display modes are available that each focus on one aspect, making it easy to select the best for you. The Incline tab shows a profile of the incline settings of the workout that you’re currently on while the Speed tab shows a profile of the speed settings of the workout. The My Trail tab is actually a virtual 400 m (1/4 mile) track which shows your position on the track as you progress through your run as well as showing the number of laps you’ve completed. There’s also a calorie burn tab that shows you a guide to the number of calories burned during each segment of your programme. There’s an indicator bar that shows the intensity of your training, which you can access in real-time. This layout has been carefully thought out, and it provides many clear and concise means of keeping track of your progress.
You can also choose from manual mode. There are 18 pre-set programs that are broken down into different categories, such as speed training, intensity training, calorie burning, or incline training. The console has a number of buttons to access each programme. Once in a programme, during your run it’s possible to override the settings with a push of one of the speed or incline buttons so if you do find things getting a bit too intense it’s easy to drop the difficulty for that segment to catch your breath. So that you don’t interrupt the flow of the exercise, it returns to its initial settings before the next segment begins.
