Is it something we would recommend? Purple’s Purple Grid is only for you if it feels good to you. It is not recommended for anyone who has a body weight greater than 200 pounds.

What it feels like: The gel foam is shaped into a hollowed-out grid that has a jigglier feel than memory foam or polyfoam. The columns of gel foam buckle under body weight, so you feel cradled but, as one tester explained, also “buoyed up.” It’s hard to pinpoint the firmness level. As one unimpressed tester put it: “How is this soft and firm at the same time? It’s almost like the worst. For people who are aware that memory foam can make them sweat, this advantage may prove to be attractive. Purple was found to be one of the best mattresses for isolating motion during our group testing.

Purple is also readily available at more than 2,500 Mattress Firm locations, Macy’s, and select departmental stores. You can even try it before making a purchase (which we strongly recommend). Purple’s website will tell you if your local store carries the mattress.

What we dislike: We found less edge support on cheaper mattresses.

We’re not sure how well this mattress will hold up over the long term, especially given that we don’t have any data to confirm the durability of the proprietary Purple Grid top layer. Some reviews mention sagging or quality decline. The middle and bottom layers of polyfoam seem good at 1.8 to 2 pounds per cubic yard, which is within the limits of experts’ expectations for durability. One staffer and his wife who have owned the Purple for just over three years are still happy with theirs. He’s around 180 pounds, and his wife is about 130 pounds, and they haven’t yet noticed any problems with body indentations or sagging.

For the Purple Mattress, we analysed 96 reviews from 2017 to 2019. We discovered multiple comments in each review, with a combined total of 43 positives and 261 negativities. Here are some of the top issues.

A while back, we wanted to know what Purple mattresses were being rated by people. From 2017 to 2019, we collected 96 valuable online owner reviews. The comments show some trends, despite being a small sample. Most strikingly, the fourth and fifth most frequently complained about items are deterioration, and specifically premature sagging. From 96 people who reviewed the report, about 38% reported one or both.

After filtering for those that owned the mattress over a year, we found that the majority of the reviewers had experienced quality decline or premature sagging. It was 16 people out of 21. However, the owner’s weight didn’t seem to make a difference. The owners’ body weights were not affected by how long the mattresses had been owned. We found that five of the 12 owners who exceeded 200 pounds complained of problems with sagging and degrading of their mattress. Only eight of the 15 owners who are less than 200lbs reported the same problem.
