Sony X700 Performance

The X700 delivered exactly the kind of performance I would expect from a Sony player, and was pretty much perfect. My one complaint about the X700 is not the picture or sound quality. Instead, it’s the annoying noise it makes. Although the build quality of the player seems plastic, it can still navigate discs quite a bit and is quite noisy when playingback. The noise level is comparable to the UP970 at home and certainly louder than that of the UBPX800 I reviewed last year. It all depends on what content you watch and where it is situated. But, on quieter content, the player often alerted me, which was not ideal.

Other than that, my tests were flawless and the X700 delivered a stunning picture performance. A player that correctly outputs what’s on the disk over HDMI should perform the same way as the other. The X700 doesn’t do anything that it shouldn’t. It handled Ultra HD Blurays flawlessly, reproducing every bit of the WCG, HDR and resolutions encoded on them with no problems. They were clean of all unnecessary colour and back door noise reduction. Sony also detected the display’s native capabilities, optimised their output, and this resulted in images that looked great.

But there are plenty of options for tweaking the output. I was able to select 4:4/4 chroma upsampling and it worked great. The X700 is able to detect if a 4K monitor doesn’t have HDR support and will down-convert the HDR from SDR. Also, I found this method to be quite efficient. Although the X700 Ultra HD Blu-ray player supports HDR10 in 4K Ultra HD, it is not compatible with the DolbyVision update. This is a shame because Dolby Vision has been its greatest selling point.

I was expecting the X700 to perform similarly well when dealing with both 3D Bluray discs as the 2D Blu-ray. And so it did. Without any unnecessary image enhancements the Sony successfully played back my discs. The player’s scaling is outstanding and creates sharp images without any colour problems or backdoor noise reduction. The X700 was able to scale low-resolution images and deinterlace them for Ultra HD screens.

The X700 can support 4K HDR video services such as Amazon and Netflix. It was fast and efficient, dynamically adjusting its output signal based upon the framerate. Playback will look smooth and movie-like, with 24/23.976 frames/second (fps). Sony cannot play this material at 50 or 25 frames per second, so UK catchups content won’t appear optimally. It was, however, very watchable.

Digital transports like the X700 are not supposed to be any more sounding than others over HDMI or coaxial output. But, it can code both 5.1 Dolby and 7.1 Dolby Master Audio. You can stream bitstream soundtracks and the device works with immersive audio formats such as Dolby Amos DTSX Auro-3D. The X700 handled SACD discs well. It delivered excellent audio via stereo and multichannel, as well as CDs. The X700 also did a great job with various audio files over my home network, making it an excellent all-round digital media player.

Sony Ubp-X700 4K Blu-Ray Player Review

Sony UBPX700, a brand new Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray player should be on your list. The disc spinner has a decent selection of features, including SACD playback and Dolby Vision support. To hit a lower price point Sony has dropped certain features, such as Hi-Res Audio support and DVD-Audio playback, but the X700 can handle plenty of file types and all other disc formats.

Sony is making the most of the lower cost player. This concession can be seen in the materials used as well as the build quality. The player weighs less and is made up mainly of plastic. As a result, it feels more affordable than the X800. While the included remote control can be fiddly and small but does the job.

The new player has a strong performance, with excellent playback of 4K content and upscaling of lower-resolution content. While the X700 is a digital transportation, audio quality is excellent over coaxial or HDMI. However, it was not intended to be an audiophile device. Easy to use, but very effective user interface. Support for streaming is excellent.

It is worth looking at the Sony UBPX700 regardless of your display, though Sony TV owners might be most benefited from it. This new player has Dolby Vision and will benefit all. The X700 is one of the most affordable ways to play discs. This makes it a great deal. It’s definitely worth your consideration, even if DolbyVision isn’t required.

If you want a budget 4K player and DolbyVision support, your choices are very limited. You should definitely consider the LG UP970. While it is not the most impressive disc spinner you’ve ever seen, its smart platform can sometimes make it a little noisy and it doesn’t have the greatest playback quality. The UP970, at PS169, is the cheapest option to get Dolby Vision.

If DolbyVision isn’t your interest, but you still love Sony products then the UBPX800 may be worth consideration. It may be a year older, but the player is still great. The UBP-X800 has superb build quality and universal disc playback. Hi-Res Audio supports are also available. These attributes give it the advantage over the X700. This makes it attractive because it can be purchased for as low as PS285, which is a great deal.

Sony Ubp-X700 Ultra Hd Blu-Ray Player Reviewed

Adrienne Maxwell is the former Managing Editor of HomeTheaterReview.com , Home Theater Magazine, and HDTVEtc.com. A certified ISF level II video calibrator, she specializes as a reviewer of flat-panel HDTVs.

Earlier this year, Sony added a new, lower-priced player to its Ultra HD Blu-ray lineup. The UBPX700 (199.99) is a decrease in cost from the UBPX800 (249.99), which I reviewed last summer. The X700 provides the basic features of a UHD-player, including the ability pass the UHD signal to a UHD Bluray disk. It also includes Rec 2020 and HDR10 HDR. Additionally, this firmware update will add support for Dolby Vision HDR. The X700 does not offer some of the features the X800 has, but I will point them out throughout this review.

Ultra HD features aside, the UBPX700 is able to play 3D video (DVDs or CDs), audio over USB, as well as audio in high-res via USB. A nice selection of streaming services are available to the player, including Netflix VUDU Prime Video Hulu Hulu Prime Video Hulu Spotify Pandora, Hulu and Hulu Plus.

Setting up and Features Immediately notice the significant differences between the X700 form factor and the X800. Its rugged and substantial construction quality makes the X800 stand out from sub-$300-priced players. This is similar to Oppo UDP-203. The X700 is, however, similar in price to comparable players such as those from Philips, Samsung and LG. It is less wide (12.6inches by 1.8inches by 8.5deep) and weighs in at about four pounds. The X800’s heavy metal shell makes it heavier. On the front panel, there is a slide-out disk tray that hides behind a shiny drop-down doors. To the right are buttons for power and to eject. Just below them sits the USB port. The front panel does not have a display. This is quite common at this price.

These connections are comparable to the ones found in other models under $300. There are two HDMI outputs, one HDMI 2.0a output for audio and one HDMI 1.4 for video. An optional coaxial audio output for digital audio is provided. It is less commonly used these days than optical. This player lacks the Bluetooth audio output found in the X800, so you can’t wirelessly stream the audio signal to Bluetooth-enabled soundbars, powered speakers, and headphones. As with most other players of this price, the X700 lacks a DAC and analog audio outputs. Therefore, audio quality is mainly determined by your audio processor.

The only other connection option on the back panel is a LAN port to make a wired network connection; 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi is also onboard. Although the X700 does not have RS-232 or IR ports, it supports IP control.

Although the supplied IR remote may be shorter than that included with the X800, it has most of the same buttons so is packed a little more tightly. The remote lacks backlighting, but I found the button layout to be intuitive, and the differently shaped buttons makes it a little easier to locate certain functions in a darker room. A dedicated Netflix button is available. You can also add another app to your Favorite button. Remotes can be programmed for controlling your TV’s volume, power and input selection. Sony also offers a free iOS/Android control app called “Video & TV Sideview” which allows you to use your smartphone or tablet as a controller.
