Z Grills Selection

Z Grills is currently selling three kinds of grills in several configurations.

There’s the “basic series”, which comprises the smaller 450/550/450A and the larger 450/450A. The latter comes with (you have guessed it!) 450×450 inches of cooking area.

Between the 700 and 700E series is the 700E which include the popular 700E along with the 700D4E. This is the ideal size for most people.

Rounding things out is the 1000 series where you find the largest grills like the 1000E . You have many choices within each series. Each one offers different colors and storage options.

Z Grills also offers an easy comparison tool, which lets you compare specifications of up to three models.

1. The Z Grills 700D4E Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker is our top choice. This 700D4E model, an upgraded 700D version, has a number of unique features making it stand out in the Z Grills lineup.

The main grill boasts 697 square inches of cooking space. It is evenly divided between the main rack (504), and the tops racks (193). The 700D4E’s body is entirely made of rolled or stainless-steel and includes double-wall insulation.

Here’s what I don’t like about me:

One shelf. The hopper lid is not a shelf. I like to have a side or front table for setting things down while I cook.

Z Grills 700E Pellet Grill

Read our full Z Grills 700E review Older and slightly cheaper than the 700D4E, the 700E has is still a decent grill, especially if you can get it on special.

The grill’s steel body has doubled-walled insulation, but it is not made with the 700D4E. Although the 700E does not have a lid gasket, this doesn’t mean it leaks much smoke when starting up but seems to be able to maintain a constant temperature.

You get 694 inches of total cooking space, as well as closed-cabinet storage and thick coaster wheels. But, you won’t find the PID control or the pellet cleaning hatch at the back.

The upper racks of the grill are configurable. The upper racks can be configured to have either one or two. This gives you a lot of control over your cooking space.

What We Liked

Great price point – While it might be lacking the features of the 700D4E, there’s no denying that the 700E is a large, well-made, grill for a very competitive price.

Flexible – You have great control over the layout of your grill’s interior with the adjustable upper rack.

Why Wasn’t It Good

The screen is the 700E’s very tiny LED screen that regulates temperature. In direct sunlight, it can be hard to see.

An excellent grill for the price, the 700E has a couple of design flaws, like the control screen, that was rectified on the 700D4E. However, for the price we paid, we’d rather pay a bit more to get the latest version.

What We don’t Like:

Struggles to get hot enough to sear – All pellet grills are marketed as “do everything” machines. The one area most struggle is searing. You will struggle to sear the Z Grill’s max temperature at 450degF.

Cleaning ash, unused pellets, and other ash-related debris – There’s no way to easily remove any pellets that haven’t been used. A small shop vacuum is a good investment to ensure your vacuum doesn’t get ruined.

The grill works great for cooking meats, and temperature control is very easy.

The confusing thing about this is that they all list under the exact same Amazon listing. So make sure that you select the cart option that you desire.

Check out the Z Grills Website for the latest prices.

Read our full Z Grills 10002B2E review The next step up from the 700 series, you have the 1000 series which are the largest grills from Z Grills.

They are very similar to the original grill design. However, there is a third rail and more space for food.

Temperature range

Z Grills can heat from 180°F to 450°F, which is fairly standard for a pellet smoking device. They advertise the 450degF is suitable for grilling and searing, and, while it will get the job done, in our opinion, it’s not quite hot enough to do it well.

Thanks to Traeger’s newly upgraded temperature controller, most of their models (with the exception of the Renegade ), now get up to 500degF. While it isn’t a huge cost, but you will still be able do all the work on one unit with this additional bit.

Some Camp Chef’s or Pit Boss’s have slide-and-grill functions that allow you to cook hotter directly on the firepot. You can see our Traeger and Camp Chef comparison or read the Pit Boss and Traeger reviews. The bottom line is that neither Z Grills, nor Traegers are good for grilling. Traeger is a bit hotter… TRAEGER.

This review of Z Grills was updated on December 21, 2021. It was difficult to find information, and their website wasn’t very informative.

When I clicked on the live chat button the person was very helpful but not able to help me a lot.

It was amazing to see how much things improve after I started writing the reviews.

In my quest to discover more and include Zgrills on my pellet grill review pages, when I began to write Z-grills reviews I found an article by bbqdryrubs.com. It stated that these pellet grills are a direct copy of Traeger’s pellet grills.

However, someone sent me an email claiming that the z grills are closer to Grilla grills. If all of this is true then it explains the low prices for the z grills pellet smokers. They eliminate the middle man by selling identical pellet smokers under their brand on the American marketplace.

Many Zgrills reviews have many of the same pros & cons I saw in my Traeger Reviews. I believe this is even more.

Although I couldn’t find many people talking about the Zgrills ZPG 450A, I did find a few who gave the model an average rating of 4.3 stars.

My little higher rating in this very limited Z-grill 450-A review is based on the fact that there were a few complaints about packaging and that has nothing to do with the quality of this pellet smoker.

I Like What I Like

Image credit: Courtney Reilly / Backyard Boss After we got all the parts in place, we began the initial firing instructions. The instructions were correct and everything worked as expected. It took a little over an hour to make sure we burned off any unwanted containments or oils. Then, we started to prepare our brisket. It was too exciting to cook the first time that we forgot to wrap the grease drain pan in tin foil. Fortunately, there wasn’t too much to clean, and came off pretty easily.

Cooking is a breeze! It is so easy to set the temperature, and the grill does the rest. You can rely on its features to cook food evenly and at consistent temperatures. The amazing flavors that are infused in your food is not to be overlooked. Z Grills’ smoked brisket recipe was followed. We used cherry-flavored wood pellets and had a delicious dinner.

If you have read my reviews of the Z Grills, then you will know that I love the cookbooks. Z Grills offers a wide variety of books online, even though there was no physical copy. You can find information about my cooking methods, the type of food and holiday-specific recipes.

This is my favorite part about grilling.

The 8-in-1 versatility in cooking is another feature that I love. We have two picky little eaters so I was concerned that the pellet grills wouldn’t allow us to cook hot dogs or hamburgers. The 500c and many other new models allow us to do this, plus so much more.

Lastly, the aesthetics of this grill are modern, with a hint of rustic. I love the bronze details and the wood shelf is my favorite. This is a beautiful addition to outdoor decor. It also makes a wonderful prep station.
