Target, with almost 2,000 locations across the U.S. and growing, is an impressive retailer. It’s the country’s second largest discount retailer.

Walmart holds the number two spot in terms of retail stores, having over 11,000 outlets. Amazon was second only in 2019, however.

Walmart Vs Target In 2022 (Prices, Products, Services + More)

The competition between these two chains, which cultivate decidedly different brand identities and customer bases, is fierce. What is the difference?

They are ready to face off: Walmart Vs Target. It is time for the biggest box stores to take on each other! Continue reading to see comparisons of their prices, stores, and products.

  • Walmart Vs. Target In 2022
  • Walmart Vs Target: Market Share
  • Walmart still holds the biggest share in the general retail market at 15.9%.

Target, which accounts for 2.47 percent, is further down on the list.

Target, however, is on the top of 38 percent when we change the market to share in department store markets.

Walmart and Macy’s are tied for third with 13 percent.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Stores
  • Walmart considers Bentonville Arkansas its home. The town was established in 1962 by Sam Walton.

Target headquarters and home base are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is a short drive north of there.

Target and Walmart both have locations in every 50 state in the U.S. but Walmart’s expansion overseas has been limited to just 27 states.

Walmart boasts a store count of well over 11,000 in all parts of the world. Target has 1,909 stores located in the U.S.

Two buildings of the exact same design – a huge cube– have two different stores.

  • Size
  • Walmart Supercenters can be combined a supermarket and department store to cover a total of 179,000.
  • Consider the extra space for all the parking and backend deliveries.

Target stores average 130,000 square feet – not a whole lot smaller, but Target is moving to maintain mini-versions of anywhere from 13,000 to 40,000 square feet.

One of the major problems for big-box stores is their geography.

Target will be able insinuate itself in places, such as busy streets in cities. Target Supercenters would never work in these areas.

  • Layout and Atmosphere
  • While store layouts may vary between retailers, the core of the business remains the same.

Targets, full-sized Walmarts, or Supercenter Walmarts, offer their groceries in separate sections. Targets also has long, tall aisles.

Each department can be found within the ascribed aisles.

Target and Walmart similarly label/number aisles with numbers using some mixture of letters and numerals.

Walmart gets some flack for the lack of organization and general disarray that their stores can often be found in.

Even with so many workers, it’s hard to envision a clean house, so to speak, for as many of them as there are.

So you are more likely to see mixed-up items, messy displays, and random objects lying around at Walmart than versus Target.

Target has, even if it is not perfect, a reputation to be more “bougie”, making them appealing to younger and wealthier individuals.

  • Retailers and In-Store Restaurants
  • Walmart and Target are each part of partnerships with other retailers and restaurants, which offer enhanced customer experiences.

Some Walmarts even have Subway restaurants, with a complete menu and seating.

But customers can look forward to options like Taco Bell and Domino’s in the near future.

Targets opened Starbucks shops in some of their stores.

Additionally, Target recently announced that they are partnering with beauty chain Ulta to bring mini-beauty stores-within-a-store to shoppers.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Products
  • Walmart and Target offer many of same product types, but the variety, brand and selection of each store can be vastly different.

Walmart Supercenters have the ability to stock up to 142,000 unique items at one time, while Target can only carry a fraction of that number (though it’s hard for me not finding an exact number).

Both retailers have multiple departments and many different products. Below is a complete list of all the departments in both shops:

  • Groceries
  • Fashion and accessories
  • Beauty and Personal Hygiene
  • Sports Gear
  • Home Goods
  • Get essential household items
  • Supplies for Office
  • Electronics
  • Garden And Outdoors
  • Pet Supplies
  • Toys And Games
  • Auto (Walmart offers a wider range of vehicles in this location)
  • Crafts
  • Let’s compare Walmart’s and Target’s products more closely.

  • Unique Brands and Private Labels
  • Walmart’s iconic “off-brand” (or store brand) is Great Value. Great Value has a large selection of commonly available food items and some of the most affordable prices.

There are also other exclusive Walmart brands that are popular:

  • Sam’s Choice : “Premium tier” food products
  • Marketside – Deli-style foods
  • Equate-Pharmacy, beauty, and healthcare products
  • Mainstays Home Decor and Home Goods
  • Douglas/SuperTech/Everstart – Car equipment and accessories
  • A Parent’s Choice-Baby goods
  • George/Terra & Sky Time and Tru Wonder Nation – Apparel
  • Better Homes & Gardens : Home goods inspired from the magazine
  • The Best Occasions Party Supplies
  • Hyper Tough Power Tools and Hand Tools
  • Walmart sells only Tasty – Kitchen tools under the Buzzfeed label
  • Target offers a number of private label brands such as Archer Farms (Simply Balanced), Market Pantry and Good & Gather.

Target has other private label brands like:

  • up & over – Hygiene, paper and health label
  • A New Day/Ava & Viv/Original Utilize/Goodfellow & Co./Universal Thread f Target/Wild Fable/Xhilaration – Apparel for the whole of family
  • Auden/All-in Motion – Women’s Intimates and Activewear
  • Made by Design, Houseware and Travel Essentials
  • Room Essentials is the most basic and affordable brand of home goods, ideal for new tenants and students.
  • Opalhouse – Eclectic home goods
  • Threhold – Classic home goods
  • Embark – Outdoor equipment
  • Sonia Kashuk: Target acquired a Beauty/Make-up Label in 2016
  • The highest quality
  • Target markets toward the upwardly mobile and higher-income consumers – but does that mean their products are better?

Both are pretty equal in terms of food. Walmart is known for its high quality food, and their steep discounts (they must compete with Aldi).

Target seems to have a slight edge in clothing sales.

Walmart’s stylish products have come a long ways since its inception. But, they are a bit less tailored than other retailers, which can prove to be good for vanity sizing.

Target clothing has a greater durability and is tailored to an exact shape.

  • Choose from a variety
  • Walmart has a lot of options. Walmart, in fact, is the best place to shop if your mind wants to overwhelm with options.

Target makes it easy to tell the difference between 34 varieties of kettle chip.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Prices
  • You might assume that Walmart will be less expensive than Target.

You can generally be trusted, even when you are talking about some of the home goods lines or many different pieces of clothing.

People often wonder whether it is economically feasible to order groceries from Target online or in store.

Clark.com was able to conduct a price comparison. Many items had comparable pricing.

Target was higher in multiple cases than Target by pennies.

Walmart is the more affordable option, and a 12-pack Coca-Cola Cans are different by one-cent.

JIF peanut butter showed a greater disparity of 5 cents.

Walmart has a lower price in some cases. If you are at Target and just need to get groceries, there isn’t any reason to shop elsewhere.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Services
  • Walmart outdoes Target in terms of additional store services, however. Walmart wins this category.

The following is a listing of services that Walmart stores might offer.

  • Pharmacy
  • Vision
  • Bank transactions are usually done in-store at a Woodforest National Bank branch
  • Auto (including oil change, tire change and car battery replacement/disposal
  • Target does not offer pharmacy services.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Customer Service
  • Walmart scored significantly higher than Target in customer satisfaction, and the likelihood that customers will recommend Walmart to others.

It is likely that this will translate into a better customer service rank for Walmart too. However, anecdotally, you wouldn’t believe it.

Google reviews of Target and Walmart in my area were compared. Walmart received one star reviews and all of them complained about poor customer service.

The one-star reviews for my Target, however, focused on things like in-store pick up and lack of product availability.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Return Policy
  • Walmart offers very generous returns policies. You have 90 days from the date you receive your item to be returned.

  • A store credit can be used to refund any purchases made without receipts. For a full explanation of the return policy click here.
  • Target’s returns policy is identical: It takes place within 90 days of receipt.

If you don’t have your receipt, Target will still accept the return (and they’ll go looking in their store records for it); you’ll receive store credit instead of cash.

Click here to review Target’s return policies.

Walmart does seem to be a place where anything is possible. I remember returning gallons of milk that had been opened without receiving a receipt. I received cash back.

  • We have to give them big thumbs up!
  • Walmart vs. Walmart: Store pick-up, App and Website
  • Walmart’s website is chaotic, just like the store itself.

Two domains are actually used to separate the website: one is used for local shops and one is used for Walmart.com. Walmart.com was probably created for competition with Amazon.

Although it shouldn’t seem difficult, there are two distinct carts that can be confusing.

It’s slightly better than theirs, but it doesn’t seem intuitive to me.

Target sells online items, but they’re clearly identified as exclusive online products.

I also like Target’s app a lot better, and I find it to be more intuitive and user-friendly.

Walmart’s situation regarding store pickup isn’t my favorite. You have to schedule a time for your pick-up, and if there are no slots available that day, you’re out of luck.

Target is great at this: You place your order online and you know it will arrive within two hours. You then have the option to go and pick it it up wherever you are.

I will say, though, that I have had issues with both retailers when it comes to ordering something that appears to be in stock online but is out of stock in-store.

  • Walmart Vs Target: Employee Satisfaction
  • It was my goal to find out the satisfaction rates of employees at Target and Walmart. I also went to Indeed, a job search company.

Walmart placed lower in overall rankings, only by one decimal place. While both stores received their fair share positive reviews from customers, they had a very different atmosphere.

  • Target’s “catty” work environment was described by one customer as high school.
  • Walmart had a reviewer who highlighted how Walmart has altered policies in order to disadvantage employees.

Both retail outlets received low scores on pay and performance, culture and management.

  • Walmart vs. Target: Demographics of Customers
  • Business Insider has reported that Target’s ideal shopper is a suburb Millennial mom with a degree from a university and a family income of more than $80,000.

Walmart’s target audience is older than 55-64 years old. However, it also includes a woman but not mentioning children (perhaps an empty nester?). ).

The average undergraduate student has $80,000 in a year.

I find this surprising, and it could just be Walmart’s strategy to reach that market with high-end products such as the Sam’s Choice.

You now know the difference between Walmart and Target. However, it might be worth your time reading about 33 Walmart statistics, trends, best times to shop at Target, 23 Target statistics facts, trends, and 23 Target statistics.

  • Conclusion
  • Target and Walmart compete for shoppers’ dollar, but I believe both stores have done an excellent job in creating their own niches.

At Walmart, you’ll see super-low prices that you always count on, and oftentimes messy or chaotic store experience and super easy returns.

Target may have a more formal and well-organized atmosphere but their grocery selections aren’t as vast.

You will be able to see exactly what you are buying in any store before even stepping foot into it.

Is Walmart able to offer more products than Target?

Target and Walmart have many products in common, but the brands, selection, and variety can all vary. Walmart Supercenters might carry 142,000 products in one location, while Target may have fewer items (though it’s hard to find out the exact number).

Walmart and Target: How Do They Compete?

Target (NYSE, TGT) is its main competitor and has been gaining market share through catchy advertisements and innovative design partnerships. They have very different business models. Walmart favors low costs, Target is more focused on profit margin and youthful appearance.

    Target Or Wal-Mart?

Target only offers electronics at a lower price than Walmart. Walmart has all the other categories covered. Target is the best place to shop for electronics if you want the lowest prices.
