Target, with almost 2,000 locations across the U.S. and growing, is an impressive retailer. It’s the country’s second largest discount retailer.
Walmart holds the number two spot in terms of retail stores, having over 11,000 outlets. Amazon was second only in 2019, however.
The competition between these two chains, which cultivate decidedly different brand identities and customer bases, is fierce. What is the difference?

Target has, even if it is not perfect, a reputation to be more “bougie”, making them appealing to younger and wealthier individuals.
Walmart and Target are each part of partnerships with other retailers and restaurants, which offer enhanced customer experiences.
Some Walmarts even have Subway restaurants, with a complete menu and seating.
But customers can look forward to options like Taco Bell and Domino’s in the near future.
Targets opened Starbucks shops in some of their stores.
Additionally, Target recently announced that they are partnering with beauty chain Ulta to bring mini-beauty stores-within-a-store to shoppers.

Both are pretty equal in terms of food. Walmart is known for its high quality food, and their steep discounts (they must compete with Aldi).
Target seems to have a slight edge in clothing sales.
Walmart’s stylish products have come a long ways since its inception. But, they are a bit less tailored than other retailers, which can prove to be good for vanity sizing.

Walmart has a lower price in some cases. If you are at Target and just need to get groceries, there isn’t any reason to shop elsewhere.

Walmart scored significantly higher than Target in customer satisfaction, and the likelihood that customers will recommend Walmart to others.
It is likely that this will translate into a better customer service rank for Walmart too. However, anecdotally, you wouldn’t believe it.
Google reviews of Target and Walmart in my area were compared. Walmart received one star reviews and all of them complained about poor customer service.
The one-star reviews for my Target, however, focused on things like in-store pick up and lack of product availability.
Walmart offers very generous returns policies. You have 90 days from the date you receive your item to be returned.
Target’s returns policy is identical: It takes place within 90 days of receipt.
If you don’t have your receipt, Target will still accept the return (and they’ll go looking in their store records for it); you’ll receive store credit instead of cash.

Walmart does seem to be a place where anything is possible. I remember returning gallons of milk that had been opened without receiving a receipt. I received cash back.
Walmart’s website is chaotic, just like the store itself.
Two domains are actually used to separate the website: one is used for local shops and one is used for Walmart.com. Walmart.com was probably created for competition with Amazon.
Although it shouldn’t seem difficult, there are two distinct carts that can be confusing.
It’s slightly better than theirs, but it doesn’t seem intuitive to me.
Target sells online items, but they’re clearly identified as exclusive online products.
I also like Target’s app a lot better, and I find it to be more intuitive and user-friendly.
Walmart’s situation regarding store pickup isn’t my favorite. You have to schedule a time for your pick-up, and if there are no slots available that day, you’re out of luck.
Target is great at this: You place your order online and you know it will arrive within two hours. You then have the option to go and pick it it up wherever you are.
I will say, though, that I have had issues with both retailers when it comes to ordering something that appears to be in stock online but is out of stock in-store.
It was my goal to find out the satisfaction rates of employees at Target and Walmart. I also went to Indeed, a job search company.

At Walmart, you’ll see super-low prices that you always count on, and oftentimes messy or chaotic store experience and super easy returns.
Target may have a more formal and well-organized atmosphere but their grocery selections aren’t as vast.
