Discussion Starter * Here’s my review. However, the Belt works perfectly. But compare the Gates pump at 40k miles to my standard 130kmile pump. The seal on the Gates water pump was corroded and shattered, leading to severe leakage. However, the OEM seal remains plump and is soft. The Gates has a flat surface that is embedded into the notch. It is rock solid. In case you’re wondering whether it was done correctly, it has the correct torque (1/4 turn to 8ft.lbs. (104 lb)). The pumps were always running Peak Full strength (Silicatefree as Honda wishes) though both pumps. What happened to the Gates pump, you ask? Please note that this picture does not show how the pumps got off the car.

We appreciate your feedback and thoughts regarding the water pump you purchased at 40,000 miles. You can see my observations in the photo. You can send them in to have the pumps tested further. I can provide a Fed. Send me an Ex shipping label, if desired. Michigan lab has the ability to analyze and diagnose pump failures.

In looking at the comparative photo the Gates pump is showing signs of system electrolysis (darkening of the pump interior) and contamination (rusted impeller). Electrolysis can also affect the rubber gasket which you noted had hardened.

Honda recommends that you use Peak Full-Strength coolant. What type of water did you mix with the coolant? When removing the OE pump did you flush the entire system including the radiator, heater core and engine block? It is possible for the old coolant to affect the coolant that has been introduced. This can be done by diluting any protective corrosion inhibitors. These protect the metals from oxidation.

Particulates and other contaminants can cause system contamination, which leads to leakages in the seals that could lead to the premature failure of your pump.
