Your coworkers will not be able see you if you perform oral sex with a partner and then walk casually into the office. On the contrary, if your partner wakes up and you go to the dentist, they might be able see the rest of what you’re doing.
This disturbing and potentially alarming revelation comes from TikTok. TikTok is where many oral health professionals have posted videos recently confirming an old rumor regarding the ability of dentists to detect if you have had a particular sex organ removed.
Huzefa Kapadia posted a video showing how dentists sometimes can tell whether a patient had oral sex with a penis-having companion. This is due to something called palatal Petechiae. It’s bruising of soft-palate which can happen when oral sex is frequent and aggressive. According to Kapadia, it’s unlikely that a single oral sex session would result in the tell-tale sign, but if, for example, “you like to suck on multiple, multiple, multiple, multiple lollipops all the time … you got a problem,” he explained in the video, swapping in candy as a PG euphemism.
“Sometimes we can tell,” orthodontist Brad Podray said in another viral TikTok video addressing the rumor. It’s typically bruising to the soft palate, called petechiae. But unless the patient’s really young or shows signs of abuse, we don’t care.” Dental hygienist and TikTok user @MandiMaeee also chimed in to the oral sex dentistry discourse, explaining that while a dentist isn’t going to be able to tell whether or not you’ve ever done the deed just by looking at your mouth, performing recent or intense fellatio might leave you vulnerable to detection. That I would know if you’d done the deed three years earlier? She said that no. If you had done it in the past and were very aggressive, it could have caused bruising. So yes, we can tell.” It’s important to note that none of this really matters. What kind of sex you’re having when and with whom is none of your dentist’s business, and they probably don’t care at all. Consider easing up on the dental for a couple of days ahead of your next appointment if you aren’t happy to show any sign of recent or past performance.

This is due to bleeding called “petechiae” inside the person’s mouth. But that does not mean it’s common. Or that dentists can determine whether you have performed this act.
In the French Journal of Venereal Diseases, there was the first reported case of fellatio-induced oral lesions. In 2017, a paper reexamining the case said that it was noteworthy not only because of its original publication but also because of the enthusiastic way the corresponding doctor presented the case. It involved a sex worker, who he considered to have a very strong work ethic. Translated from French in the 2017 paper, the doctor described his patient as “conscientious” and “had attached herself work like an octopus. The TikTok clip highlights a 2018 TikTok case report that details a 47-year old-man who was diagnosed with a lesions during a dental examination.
While examining the oral cavity we found a circular-shaped erythematous lesion with a clear centre on the patient’s soft palate. The lesion was not noticed by the patient. …The patient admitted to being sexually active. The patient admitted that he was sexually active with men. This last incident occurred 3 days before this visit. … With this information, we concluded that the erythema on the soft palate was associated with the practice of oral sex.
several case reports like these can be found in the scientific record. One 2013 study that reviewed all the available literature concerning fellatio/associated oral lesion reported there was likely to be many mechanisms of injury due to the sex act. The authors wrote that direct and violent contact between the distal penis and the palate could cause mucosal injury, rupture of submucosal vessel and hemorhage. The 2018 paper also mentions the possibility of “the negative pressure generated while sucking” which can cause tissue damage in the mouth.
Though work in this area is extremely limited, it is not clear that a majority or even many cases of fellatio result in lesions. TikTok featured the 2018 TikTok study. This study cited a thesis on Peruvian sexual workers. The study found that only 17 of the 132 had fellatio related lesions. While the rest of the workers did not suffer any injuries, most fellatio-related lesion were asymptomatic. The lesions usually resolve themselves. Although these lesions are usually resolved on their own, the point is not to claim that your dentist has any secrets. “Those working in the area of head and neck medicine should consider fellatio as an addition to the differential aetiology of intraoral petechiae,” a 2013 case report concluded The observation of petechiae in the mouth could be the result of several non-fellatio related causes, as well. It is also inaccurate to claim that dentists can diagnose oral sex. A dentist may be able to identify fellatio-related injury if they have combined clinical observations and the sexual history of their patients. The 2013 case report stated that “the fellatrix/felator might not know the etiology or be unwilling to give these details” and suggested that “the clinician must have a high indicator of suspicion based upon the clinical presentation of the patient and their collaborating history of prior fellatio.” However, dentists may still be able to detect some fellatio-related injuries if they combine observations of lesions with the patients’ medical and sexual histories.

I have been going to Angel Care Dental since I was a young child… so quite a while 😉 and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. The facility is beautiful, the care and gentle touch mean everything to me because I don’t like going to the dentist – who does? But it’s different here and I leave feeling genuinely happy.
